Carolyn Overington's The One Who Got Away had me intrigued from the beginning. A quick and easy read that is well paced and filled with interesting characters - which could have been more thoroughly fleshed out, but in the end, we know all we need to know. Surely, the mark of a great writer? I enjoyed the twists and turns, the multiple viewpoints, the social commentary regarding justice and the money/power question. And the conclusion! Nicely explained with a minimum of fuss and making perfect, obvious-after-the-fact sense.
Some Goodreads reviews question Ms Overington's setting of this story in the US... since when does an author have to restrict their story locations to their own country? We would never have heard of Middle Earth if that was some sort of literary law! Thank goodness it is not.

This book suffered from being read immediately after one of Liane Moriarty's. Overington's style is heavy-handed by comparison, and her characterisations lack Moriarty's insight and nuance. The narrative devices were clunky and the twist at the end was predictable. I persevered because it had been recommended by others whose judgement I respect, but I was glad to finish it.

Unfortunately this story felt like it was trying too hard and it doesn't work. I wasn't interested in any of the characters nor what happened to them therefore I didn't finish the book.
I did, however, read one of the authors non fiction books and found this much more engaging. The Last Woman Hanged in NSW shows the writers investigative journalist talents in full swing and it is well worth reading.

Fine for lying on a beach in the sun and dozing off, picking it up and not caring where you were up to. If it gets sandy, or wet or covered in ice cream, no problem, you're just going to throw it away anyway. It's OK, but certainly no more than that, generally weak and while it's trying to introduce twists and turns, I didn't care enough about anyone to be bothered.

From the blurb this book looked promising, however it was so closely related to Gone Girl.
I gave it two stars as it is certainly a very readable book and at no point did I feel like I wanted to stop reading.
The plot draws you in. However, again, there are so many similarities to Gone Girl that I really wanted a different story. I picked the ending about three quarters of the way through the book, and like other reviewers have said, it's just not very believable.
Overall, not the worst book I've read but it could definitely have been better.

Loren thinks she has the perfect life - a big house, a handsome husband, two beautiful girls, and nothing to want for. But one day, when picking her daughters up from their high-class private school, she is handed a sealed envelope, and the contents of this envelope is about to change her life...
This is the first Overington book I have ever read. I am familiar with her as I have heard her name through the grapevine in relation to previous works. I wasn't sure what to expect when I sat down with this book, but I found it reasonably enjoyable. It wasn't terribly well written, but it was engaging. The pieces of the puzzle were revealed bit by bit, and it was enough to keep me entertained and wanting to know more.
This is an easy read, and you won't see the twist coming. Definitely recommended to those of you who are enjoying the woman-centric suspense-thriller genre that seems to be popular as of late (i.e. Gone Girl, Girl on the Train, Pretty Baby etc).

An Easy read. Suspense / mystery.
Slow start but picked up around half way in. The plot is semi predictable although I didn't see the final plot twist coming.
