Book Lovers by Emily Henry

Despite believing this author needs a thesaurus to find new words to describe men's voices, smiles, and laughs, I did cry 4 separate times and yelled "IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL" at the end. So Emily Henry gets the last (low, rough, hoarse, gravelly) laugh after all.

Cute and witty. I enjoyed the flashbacks every few chapters. Had some pretty contrived conflicts but doesn't every cheesy love story?
I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

Devastatingly raw and honest and so sincerely written. It was like a friend was telling me a story late at night during a sleepover. Really good pacing and I think the ending came at a natural time. I'm excited to read anything else she comes out with in the future.
Side note: As someone with obsessive compulsive disorder, I was really interested when reading the bits describing her obsessive compulsive tendencies. Our rituals have some overlap, which was weirdly comforting to read about. I could really relate to her struggling with massive amounts of guilt over every little thing despite nothing being her own fault.

This book gave me whiplash. Felt like I was watching an M. Night Shyamalan movie. I understand it isn't supposed to be realistic, but I couldn't 100% get behind the supernatural part of the storyline. It seemed like a cop-out way to get to the ending and I think the author could have had the main character piece together the mystery without the help of the paranormal. Either way, a good 3-hour rainy day read.

How lucky am I this year to keep reading books so wonderful I deem them all my new favorites? I am in love with how this book makes me feel and how it captures grief and loss and growth and the little wonders of science and spirituality that keep us guessing what happens after life on this earth ends. If you read any of my 5 star books, I hope you read this one.
Wrong Place Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister

Really enjoyed this. Was able to guess a lot of it based on the little hints peppered throughout, but seeing it play out (backwards!) was a great time. Couldn't put it down!
Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica

For unputdownability purposes, this is a 4-star read. However, I can only suspend my disbelief so much, and therefore it gets 3 from me. Twisty and interesting, but takes a nosedive near the end toward soap opera territory. In any case, totally recommend for a quick crime mystery!
The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf

Had a few similarities to Local Woman Missing that I wasn't expecting, but this was a far more believable story! Really enjoyed it.
The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager

I liked it, then loved it, then hated it, then liked it again. Gave me whiplash for sure. Got a little far-fetched toward the beginning of the end, but reeled me back in pretty quickly. I still think the narrator makes stupid decisions, and I'm mad at how unrealistic it is. It left me feeling a little duped, because I thought I had the genre figured out. I had made some predictions but even the correct ones morphed into incorrect ones. It was pretty exciting to figure it all out. Spoiler if you've read Survive the Night:

Riley Sager needs a new twist in his books, because halfway through, I thought: "This is going to be just like the twist in Survive the Night, isn't it?" And I was 1/3 correct.
