Rethink is about women who broke into men dominated careers. Andi Simon is a Ph.D. in Anthropology and uses it in this book to observe how the women used everyday skills to become successful. The skills that stuck with me are recognizing opportunity and not feel so humble to not tell of your accomplishments. I didn't know that the fashion industry was so dominated by men before the 1970s. Maybe because I always see more women than men designer in today's fashion world. Overall, this book was informative in many ways. Much of it was not new information to me. This would be a great book for people who are just learning about the discrimination against women in the workforce. Also for people looking for encouragement to be a female glass breaker or to support women to do so.
Thank you to NetGalley & Greenleaf Audiobooks for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first time reading African Futurism and it was an intriguing and beautiful journey. In some aspects, it reminded me of the African folk tales with a twist. Sankofa gets a gift that she did not ask for and struggles to control. Her only long term companion is a fox. She struggles to find her place in the world because of people's fear and their worship of her as well. She can't remember life before the gift or even her real name. It explores being different & given the choice to change, would you?
Graphic: Homophobia, Racial slurs, Racism, Sexual violence, Slavery, Violence, and Murder
This is a sad book looking at the pain of slavery. I thought going in that it would focus on the two men Isaiah & Samuel but it is a full cast of slaves on the plantation & sometimes the slave owners. It is eye-opening at times on different dynamics that surrounded slavery. It is very detailed on the violence but it is worth it to finish.
CW: Sexual Assault, Eating Disorders, Body Shaming
How much value can you get for a dollar? I found Fierce by Aly Raisman in the Dollar Tree & it was a four-star value! Yes, she gets 4 again but, that is a good thing! It is quick-paced & looks at the pressure & high stakes of US Gymnastics. She touches on the assault but it is vaguely & limited to Chapter 22. She talks about loving her body & inspiring children. Overall, the book was a very positive read & has me watching old competitions to relax. Looking forward to what she does next.
This book was a dream. It combined realistic relationships with the fantasy of time travel flawlessly. When I thought it was going a certain direction the story changed. This book explores if we could be anywhere in time, would we have the power to figure out where we are needed and go there? The level of character development was amazing. Even the basic side characters felt real. This was my first book by Chamberlain, it will not be the last!
I read this for the 2021 Buzzwordathon. January's word was Dream.
This book was a funny, entertaining read! Her stories about growing up had me laughing out loud. Especially the story about Show & Tell. I do not know if it is a right fit for men but, any girl who wants a laugh should pick up this book.
I read the book about six months before the movie came out. I have to say the book is much better than the movie. There are many parts and details that were changed or deleted in the movie. I read this book in about two days; it was just that good! The story focuses on Mary Boleyn, who is largely forgotten by history. This book made me interested in Tudor history and other historical fiction.
Before reading this book, I recommend reading The Other Bolyen Girl first, because the book makes more sense if you are familiar with the background of Lady Jane Boleyn. In this book, unlike many written by Gregory, the story is told in first person by three characters, Lady Jane, Anne of Cleves, and Katherine Howard. Overall, the plot was interesting and the characters well defined as in many of Gregory's books.
Philippa Gregory usually has the main character of her historical fiction novels be a real person out of history. In this book; however, the story is told by Hannah Green, a fictional Jewish girl. She is able to see the events and backroom dealings of the reigns of the young King Edward, Lady Jane, and Queen Mary. Even though this plot is slightly impossible you can enjoy it if you remember the fiction in historical fiction.
This is the loose sequel to The Queen's Fool and Philippa Gregory is one of my favorite authors. With that said this book was awfully dry and had way too much policy jargon. She also told the story mostly by the point of view of Robert Dudley and since she has not written another book with a male main character has shown the weakness of this novel's voice. I doubt that Ms. Gregory was ever an ambitious man and it shows in the thoughts and actions of her Robert Dudley. Stick to the ladies!
