Gave me the information I wanted but disjointed and repetitive.

This was a really interesting book, but I felt like it didn’t have a clear enough through line. The beginning, learning about EVOO and what good olive oil is, was interesting, but the rest felt like a series of vignettes. I talked to this olive grower who can’t make money because of fraud, I talked to that olive grower who can’t make money because of fraud, etc etc. on one hand I learned some stuff and am inspired to go taste really good olive oil, on the other I feel like I didn’t retain most of the details and often spaced out.

If we spent a lot more time on the history of olive oil I would have stuck with this book for the last 40 pages, but while this book is informative, and has made me a more conscious consumer when it comes to olive oil. And while the author has moments of laying down some really beautiful prose, the repeated (repetitive) deep dives into the science of the industry got old after the third rehashing. I would have loved to hear more about the journey of olive oil across the world and how it worked its way into cultures.

Could've been an article instead of a whole book; the takeaway is that olive oil is amazing but you almost certainly can't get the real stuff. The oil you buy could be anything so why bother.

I enjoyed the time of this immensely and it really kind of meandered through history, production methods, frauds, scandals, and information about olive oil in a way that kept my interest

An interesting book about the very shady world of olive oil. Who knew that much olive oil sold as extra virgin is in fact low grade, refined olive oil or possibly even vegetable oil? At least (according to the author's website), Costco's oil is legit. Whew.

Effective at making me infuriated, if a little bit repetitive.

Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil - probably neither Italian, olive oil or extra virgin.
