Nothing really happened in this book? I get that it’s a slice of life but everything felt underwhelming and any poignant plot points like the elements of grief were totally dropped in order to talk about trivial things and twisty internal debates

started weirdly annoying (i almost dnfed) because of so many things happening at once but something about the storytelling pulls you into rooting for casey even though 1) she shares everything and nothing at the same time and 2) she has questionable life decisions

eventually you understand where she’s coming from and why she is the way she is. despite her circumstances she remains kind and open to life, and you can’t help but feel relieved to finally see her life take a turn for the better. this book feels like getting to know a stranger you’re sure you won’t get along with and becoming one of their good friends in the end

Started off a little slow and there were a lot of characters introduced quickly, which I found hard to keep track of (though that could just be a me problem.) The narration settles into a good groove though after a few chapters and finishes strong. Overall I quite liked the author’s writing style.

This was a well done “feel good” read. You can’t help but root for the protagonist as she processes grief, trauma and loneliness. she’s funny, thoughtful, and intelligent and i think many creative women in their twenties and thirties who are feeling stuck and alone will be able to relate to Casey. Loved it!

I loved this so much. Every bit of dialogue is perfectly measured and placed, it’s not overdone and it’s not too little either. Amazing characters. They are profound one second and then funny the next. Really great storytelling and that detail that is so specific that it’s general for probably any reader. Love it.

The author has a way of really bringing you into the story, I felt what Casey felt, although this was not always a good thing. I almost took away a star for the book making me feel depressed and stressed out ;-) But I can't fault an author who is so good that you lose yourself into her writing. It's also very brave to have, not only the main character, but most others, be writers, and to include lots of discussion of how to write, what is good writing and so on. Because that puts what you are reading up to that scrutiny. Lily King does not disappoint, she delivers all of the things her characters say make up a great novel.

I really enjoyed a lot of this book. I loved how King wrote about falling in love- it felt so familiar and because of that, a little painful in its nostalgia. The love and attention King gave to the *details* gave her writing so much depth. It was interesting how the same strategies of good creative writing- as described by main character Casey- were mirrored in this book itself. That said, parts of the book kind of dragged for me.
