I can't stop myself, I love Anne and after every book I'm left wanting more of her story. Simple and sweet and with great humor, these stories are the best kind of historical fiction.

I definitely prefer Anne of Avonlea, but I still very much enjoyed reading this book. I think it’d be interested to read this at the end of next year, when I graduate, or at the end of my PGCE because then I think it would reflect a lot of the feelings that I know I will have about leaving university. This book captures the sense of loss and heartache that comes with growing up, finishing university, and moving on to the next chapter of life, but also the hope that comes with this.

In this book, Anne is 18-21 and going to college. She meets a new friend with the same name as the 51st mayor of Phoenix, Phil Gordon. And she receives and turns down four separate proposals of marriage! One from her friend Jane's brother who she barely knows, one from a dude she's barely spoken to ever, one from the guy she actually ends up marrying later, and one from a guy she dated for two years but realized she didn't want to spend her life with. That's my girl, Anne, love 'em (or barely notice 'em) and leave 'em!
After reading three of these books, I am definitely in the camp that Anne could be queer. There is WAY more space devoted to her intense feelings for Diana Barry than any other relationship, and the stuff about Gilbert is always tucked away in the last chapter. I'm not saying she's definitely a lesbian, but one could certainly read it that way. When I played Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney for the first time, I was not expecting all the gay subtext in that game (and I loved it!), but it takes neither a genius nor an obsessive Yaoi fangirl to notice it. I think I would have noticed it in this book, even if I hadn't been primed by reading an article about the queer content first.
It's pretty fun seeing Anne as an adult getting to go around doing what she wants. These stories are all very sweet and I definitely plan on reading more of them.

I ended up liking this a lot. It took me a while to get into - I felt like the beginning, with Anne getting to college, was almost just sketched-in - a very great deal of telling, not showing. And I haaaated Phil at the start - I felt like the author liked her so much that she assumed the readers would like her, even though she gave us no reason to. But it picked up about a quarter of the way in and I ended up really enjoying it. I DID end up loving Phil, and I loved the place the girls lived, and the cats, and the dog statues, and Anne DETERMINED to fuck things up with Gilbert. It was a VERY satisfying read, and I'm looking forward to the next one!
