The Myth of You and Me by Leah Stewart
5.0
This novel about female friendship felt honest and real. Long lasting friendships can be both comforting and painful. I felt myself looking back to the friendships that have fallen away, the ones that lasted, and the friends that I never see. Stewart’s writing was compassionate and perceptive.

Triangle by Katharine Weber
5.0
Based on actual events of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire of 1911, the author really captured the terror and heartbreak of that day as the events are related by Esther Gottesfeld, the last remaining survivor. I enjoyed the mystery element, too, since Esther’s story seems inconsistent, and there seems to be a secret that may never be revealed. The details of factory conditions, especially for immigrant women, were a powerful reminder of recent history.

The Brooklyn Follies by Paul Auster
5.0
It doesn’t sound like the story of a 59-year-old divorced man with cancer looking for a place to die would be funny and heartwarming, but Auster has filled his novel with quirky characters of all ages who come together in a life-affirming way. It’s the little details and follies of life that Auster observes, ordinary people making mistakes, starting over and finding happiness.

Lost and Found by Carolyn Parkhurst
5.0
I don’t like reality TV, and I didn’t really want to read a book about it either. But I trusted my coworker’s recommendation. The amazing race theme of two-person teams traveling from Egypt to Japan to Scandinavia for a prize of one million dollars is more interesting than I expected, but the appeal of this book lies in the moving stories of the team members, why they became contestants and what they hope to find at the end.

First Drop by Zoë Sharp
5.0
Start with a strong female character, ex-British soldier, Charlie Fox. Add non-stop action, and a plot that confuses the good guys and the bad guys. Charlie Fox is resourceful, tough, funny and believable. She doesn’t know whom to trust and her 15-year-old charge is annoying, but Charlie is going to do her job. I couldn’t put this thriller down.

The Night Journal by Elizabeth Crook
5.0
I have always been attracted to pioneer stories told from the viewpoint of women. In this novel, Meg Mabry has resisted reading her great-grandmother Hannah’s journals, which chronicle her life in New Mexico as a Harvey girl at the Montezuma Mansion at the turn of the century.
Hannah’s daughter, Bassie, who raised Meg, has lovingly and painstakingly edited the now famous journals. Meg and Bassie are stubborn, opinionated and lonely. Yet they are bound together on a trip to New Mexico when an archaeological excavation near Hannah’s home reveals secrets left out of the family history that Bassie has tried to preserve.
A little known historical incident, the Mountain Meadows Massacre of 1857, and a tragic railway accident, demonstrate the dangers that were common in settling the American Southwest.

Obedience by Will Lavender
4.0
The intriguing premise grabbed me right away. A Logic and Reasoning university class has an assignment to find a hypothetical girl before she is murdered. The professor is kind of creepy and the students don’t know what clues and which characters are real. Be prepared for a roller coaster ride.
