Genderfluid witches (or at least, witches that can change shape and gender, that's great!

The story is a lively and enthralling tapestry, with a fascinating universe, magic, love, strategy and power games.

A bunch of kids dares the new boy in town to dress as a girl. Which he does surprisingly well.

I loved seeing a character play with gender roles, feeling more herself in girls' clothes than ever before.

It's not a story about a trans girl though, at least the character still identifies strongly as a boy. But it's a lot of questioning about gender and this I liked!

An amazing story on grief and trauma and depression and illegal immigration, with lovely themes of friendship and love and sacrifices.

There are queer main characters and most of the characters are people of color.

The cover of the book is gorgeous and it represents the book perfectly.

Such a good book! Almost all the characters are women, there's sapphic love in the corners (the MC is all about friendship and rage though), all sorts of skin color, lots of badassery and heavy fighting. There's also one disabled secondary character but her disability feels like a token, it's never addressed (but people are all accommodating to her, nobody is *too* nice, so I guess that's good).

I also love the lore and the universe of the story, it's fascinating! Plus the author is very good at explaining the way his world works, and at the beginning of Book Two he summarizes neatly what happened in the previous book, which is a nice touch.

The book contains some flash-forward and flashbacks that are very well done; we are often lead to believe certain things then discover ourselves that we were mistaken, without the characters explicitly explaining what the truth is. It feels very clever.

This is a romance novel in American suburbia with only straight people, not really anything out of the norm. The main character doesn't talk about a love interest until almost the half of the book though, which is nice!

The pitch is also interesting: the main character has to regularly move to follow her father as he changes jobs, and in doing so she reinvents herself in a new personality. "But this time, she realizes that she could be herself and make friends" could be the moral of the story.
What are you, what is home when you're constantly moving around? Do you make friends and risk heartaches, or do you stay distant enough not to make lasting attachments?

What a book! It's completely different from what I'm used to reading, a contemporary story in Nigeria.

The story talks about relationships, grief, betrayals, lies, respect, family, emotions and silences.

It also talks about, more concretely, of a woman and a man who wants to have children and have to battle obstacle after obstacle, outside and inside their marriage.
