Haven by Emma Donoghue
slow-paced

Started off strong but then once they had been on the island for a while it became repetitive and really quite boring. Very unfulfilling as a whole which is disappointing as it started off well.
The Satsuma Complex by Bob Mortimer
4.0
Pretty solid and funny. Can’t really fault it, although a little too unrealistically bizarre the characters grew on me and it all comes together quite well. The randomness of some of it makes it less predictable than a lot of other books. It’s not gonna change your life but a good fun read.
The Order of the Day by Éric Vuillard
3.5
Thought provoking and interesting. Highlights the comical aspects and farce around some huge events in history.
Life Hacks for a Little Alien by Alice Franklin
1.0
Trying too hard to be funny. Normally the sort of book I would enjoy but it had no subtlety or charm.
The Spy Who Loved Me by Ian Fleming
- Plot- or character-driven? Character
- Loveable characters? Yes
3.5
Different take from Fleming from his usual formula. Takes the first person perspective of a different character. Bond is almost a side character who comes into the story much later. The villains are done very well and are frightening, without being too pantomime like is often the case with Bond villains.
As with the rest of the books they are very of their time so sensitive contemporary readers may find some of the language and interactions disturbing.

On Sheep: Diary of a Swedish Shepherd by Axel Lindén
reflective
medium-paced
3.5
This is the second diary of a shepherd who is interested in nature and environmental issues but i felt like on this occasion the offer had a more pretentious and less informative angle. More just saying damn all these people who don’t live a better way like I do, rather than offering solutions, encouragement or reflections.
The Return by Harry Sidebottom
2.5
This isn’t my normal kind of thing but gave it a go to try new stuff. I enjoyed the world building and the way the historical context tied into relationships between characters. The murder mystery half of the plot didn’t grab me at all and I wasn’t really interested in it at all. I feel like it would have been better without it. It was like it was trying to fit into a few different sub genres of fiction.
Starve Acre by Andrew Michael Hurley
dark
mysterious
medium-paced
4.5
Really good book, creates a real spooky atmosphere and mystery by revealing just enough that keeps you hooked. Ending just wasn’t quite right for me. Felt like it needed a few more pages of something just to polish it off.
Legionary: The Roman Soldier's (Unofficial) Manual by Philip Matyszak
fast-paced
3.5
Fun and informative. Like an adult horrible histories. Whistle-stop tour and only focuses on one period.
