The Widow Queen by Elzbieta Cherezinska

This book was translated over from the original Polish edition. The names are difficult to pronounce, was unable to get a good feeling from the book.

The gist of it, that I was able to come up with, was that the King of Poland had two children by his first wife, a son and a daughter. The daughter is who the book is mainly about. The first wife died and the King remarried. His second wife is evil to the first two children and insists upon the daughter marrying a horrible man.

The writing's good, the history's interesting, and most episodes captured my interest. But, ultimately, the characters are just really flat. There isn't enough psychological depth to any of them. And the main factor that made me stop reading was that three sisters all fall in instalove with the same man, and there's no concrete reason for it. Romance without an emotional foundation is a pet peeve, and so is female characters whose primary motivations are romantic.

This is my first historical fiction book I’ve read, and I thoroughly enjoyed this story. A lot of characters, some loveable, some frustrating, but their connections and the story itself captivated me. 

Trigger warning: though they do not show it, they do mention raping, and this is base in the 900s-1000s, women are looked as possessions of fathers and husbands.

Historical Fiction at its finest. Those of you who felt ''confused'' or thought that the ''story doesn't interest you'', you can stick to your Thrillers and your housewife - porn. These books are NOT for your ignorant, uneducated lot.

Wspaniała. Klimat surowy, ostry, tak, że można było poczuć chłód kamiennych ścian zamku, zimną bryzę morza na twarzy, słodki smak miodu w ustach, usłyszeć szelest jedwabiu na posadzce i zgrzyt stali uderzającej o stal. Podziwiam tę książkę głównie za główną bohaterkę, która nie jest rozkapryszoną, egoistyczną, małą, nic nierozumiejącą dziewczynką, ale dumną, mądrą i hardą królową, która rozumie, że ponad dobro własne musi przedkładać dobro królestwa. Kiedy zostaje poinformowana, że zostanie wydana za króla Szwecji, nie wścieka się, nie grymasi, nie popełnia głupstw, ale godnie przyjmuje swój los, pojmując, że robi to dla dobra swojego kraju. Na początku trochę gubiłam się w tych wszystkich imionach, planach, intrygach i sojuszach, ale potem wszystko zostało uporządkowane i mogłam prawdziwie nacieszyć się książką. Bohaterowie wykreowani świetnie, podejmowane przez nich decyzje były inteligentne, patrzące dalej niż do następnego dnia, rzucane uwagi celne, dialogi bystre i cięte.
Zdecydowanie polecam.
