2.5 it was all over the place while having nothing happen at the same time. Then there is the “eew” factor at the end.

This is a wonderful debut novel by Sarah Maines. I can’t wait to see what she writes next. This story was atmospheric, to say the least. I could almost see the rock pools and the birds on the island. Really well written. I highly recommend this one.

It was a good read. I think I was more interested in the story in the past rather than the present story line. I liked the descriptions and the setting, and I liked most of the characters. I just wasn't as invested in the present as I was in the past. The present seemed a little jumbled at points, but all around a great combination of two stories to tell one island's related past and present.

3.5 stars.
The cover of the book was what made me reach for it. The house surrounded by water was so dark and mysterious.
I really enjoyed the 2 storylines. I found it started off a bit slow and dragged out in a few places but overall an enjoyable read. I got about half way in than couldn’t put the book down wanting to know who the bones belonged to.

Hetty heads to Muirlan in the Outer Hebrides her ancestral home to find a ruined house with a body buried under the floor boards putting a bit of a kink in her plans. She dives into the house and area history to try and figure out what happened. In 1910 Theo Blake brings his new bride Beatrice to Muirlan, hoping he'll be inspired to paint again, and while things start out well enough he quickly starts to ignore his wife and live in the past(daydreaming of his lost love). Hetty discovers that Beatrice eventually disappeared and was never seen again, but there are other secrets to be uncovered as well.
I really enjoyed the setting for this, the island is a character in the story, all the MC's are interesting, though Hetty lets herself be pushed around to much for most of the story so it's satisfying when she eventually pushes back.

Don’t bother
It’s a shame, because this was right in my sweet spot: time crossing / historical fiction / picturesque Scottish location / etc. BUT:
Ruined by overly complex / criss-crossed relationships, overly drawn out back stories, too vividly misogynistic characters…and taking too long getting to the long-since foregone conclusion.
ugh - this almost went on my DNF shelf. Save yourself the time.
