Definitely not my favourite Goosebumps book, but still an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours. This one has a weird goo that multiplies itself as well as making other things (including the main character’s dog) bigger. It’s as silly and cheesy as you’d expect a Goosebumps book to be, with a fair number of twists, but it doesn’t match the gleeful inventive fun of the best of the series.

The plot was a bit of a mess in this one, and would have benefited from some tightening up and deciding what thing it wanted to focus on. It felt like it was written to match the title of “Monster Blood” but then became interested in other things late in the process, but was beholden to the original concept. Some of the reveals felt tacked on and unearned, and like they could have been better stories on their own.

Still, Stine did a great job of building the tension, and that dreaded childhood dilemma of whether to tell an adult or wriggle out of it yourselves rang true.

It really earns it's crazy reputation those last 20 pages or so. The Beymer twins got off lucky.

i’m doggedly re-reading these in order all because there are some specific favorites i really want to get to but the perfectionist in me won’t allow me to read them out of order.

while this one was also fun to read, i enjoyed it less than the first two in the series but i did find myself empathizing heavily with evan and his attempts to get rid of the ever-growing monster blood from the very suspicious toy store more than i empathized with the characters from the previous books. if the fake monster blood i purchased from the toy store kept constantly growing and literally turning my cat (dog here) into a giant, it would without question be my last straw. i thought r.l. stine did a great job in creating the spooky tension and heightening it where you can’t help but feel evan’s frustration over possibly not being able to save his dog and getting rid of all that monstrous monster blood.

aunt kathryn’s character was perfectly creepy in the beginning and i loved her character and her creepy ass cat just the same. however, that ending twist with the cat (iykyk) was so unexpected and ott. i’m currently still recovering from the whiplash it gave me.

I AM ALSO SO HAPPY THE NEXT ONE IS “SAY CHEESE AND DIE” and i’m even much more closer to getting to “night of the living dummy” one of my personal favorites! see you soon goosebumps ily from the bottom of my spooky heart <3

A more tamer/boring goosebumps tale

I am on a journey in 2021 to re-read select Goosebumps that I read and/or watched episodes for. This one wasn't the first book in the series, but it is the one I feel most nostalgic towards. It has a kid stuck at a relative's home until their parents can find a new home. Said relative is an older and a strange lady. The "new" kid befriends a very aggressive tomboy. There are twin bullies that act as antagonists for the newcomer and tomboy. This is the recipe for almost any childhood tv show and movie (new kid + neighborhood kid + bully). It didn't disappoint. There are 4 Monster Blood books in total. I look forward to re-reading them too!

I may be holding a slight bias, considering I share the same name the main but Monster Blood is definitely one of the more well known goosebumps books for a reason. The ending
is fairly unexpected
unless perhaps you’ve already seen the show’s rendition.

Y equivocada no estaba.

Another series that I missed as a kid so I'm reading it as an adult. Definitely a fun quick read but I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first two. Probably because I think
Spoilerthe kids died in the first two and they didn't in this one
, which I know sounds terrible of me but I think it's really great that
Spoilera kids' horror author isn't afraid to kill his main characters
. Still a cool story but definitely a little bit less dark than the previous two I feel.
