I originally read some excerpts of this book for a university course where we were looking at climate disaster literature, and I’m happy to have finally come back and read the whole thing. Overall it was very solid, definitely a slow burn in that the plot really didn’t pick up until about the last third of the book, but the writing was so well done that it honestly didn’t matter. Lunde does an incredible job of demonstrating the dire situation that we are in with bees and climate change, while still showing us that there is time to change the course of our future.

This book has everything, from starved teenagers almost turned zombies to rooms full of old people feces! The pace was a little slow, but the message was nicely delivered and despite the overall super pessimistic outlook on our future, I did enjoy the unexpected hopeful notes at the end

This book was so dark and heavy. Everything was wrong, everyone was sad. It's written in an oddly simplistic style, and I could never figure out if it was intentional. It takes several chapters to follow which character/timeline is which, but I did eventually get there.

Was it a good book? I honestly don't know. It was thought-provoking. Poignant. A commentary on modern environmental concerns. Deeply human. But also so tragic that it felt like a personal attack.

All this, I suppose, to say that you should be mindful of your mindset before taking this on.

I liked how the stories were interconnected and the Tao chapters were compelling. The other two less so -unlikeable characters and anachronism that made it hard to suspend disbelief.

So as with Lunde’s other book, the pace is sort of slower and there is still the collectivist society translation issue for me. That said, I really enjoyed it! It is one of the futures I fear and she created worlds that felt authentic, particularly in 2007 and 2098.

Three well-written, engaging, loosely inter-connected stories. I found myself getting a little annoyed by the switching viewpoint, as I was just getting invested in one character's storyline when we jumped to a different story in a different time period. I felt I could never get going. That being said, all the stories are enjoyable.
