I was so disappointment from this book. This premise is fantastic, but the author fails to make the reader care about Arthur's journey. To me, the characters were extremely bland and, since I didn't care about the characters, the plot fell through for me. The plot was so predictable and rudimentary and the writing was nothing special and utterly forgettable.

I would suggest an alternative title for this book …. The ‘silent’ voice of Miriam Pepper.

Arthur’s journey of discovery (and recovery from grief) hinges on his exploration of his now dead wife’s life before meeting and marrying Arthur. There are good reasons to appreciate the story .. it is mostly ordinary and I definitely celebrate the ordinary …. but there is just the suggestion as I read that could this not be told Miriam?

It seems Arthur is a big winner in this story … he has a happy and loving wife and when he becomes a widow he gets to have new adventures (because of his dead wife’s early life) and then a new life to explore as well… I shall continue to ponder this .. the silent dead wife and the busy, adventurous husband…???

Lovely story. Tear-jerker at times. Much like a coming-of-age story but with our main character a 69 year old widower who sets out to learn the mysteries of his late wife's family. Full of interesting and touching encounters as he interacts with the world he's held at bay for the year since his wife's death, and, he learns, many years before that.

Arthur Pepper was a man of routine. After his wife, Miriam, died the previous year, Arthur prepared himself to continue stoically along until his own end. His plans were upsettingly challenged when he discovered an unfamiliar charm bracelet among his wife’s possessions. Filled with longing to connect once again with the love of his life, Arthur sets off to learn more about each unique charm. He struggles with indecision as each new bit of information seems to transform his idea of who Miriam was in life. Should he continue on this journey or preserve her memory?

The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper by Phaedra Patrick focuses on the importance of family, friendship and adventure, and is a perfect read alike for fans of The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson, A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman or The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce.

A mostly light and easy read, which was what I was looking for, however it fell a bit short of other books in this vein that I have adored, like The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry or A Man Called Ove. I found the structure of the story a bit simple/predictable and I would've liked the characters to have more depth/development. It just didn't grab my heart strings and felt overly predictable and simplistic. If I could do half stars, I'd have given it 2.5.
