I am not a fan of Robert Munsch.
This book is super creepy. A friend of mine read it and cried.
Another example of my stone cold heart.

I was watching Friends reruns yesterday, and happened to watch The One with the Cake. Joey did a dramatic reading of this book, which moved his friends. For many years, I didn't think this book was real until I looked it up. Indeed, it's a nice heartwarming, bittersweet story of a mother and her son. I imagined Joey's voice reading it to me.
There is a lingering sense of creepy clinginess with the way the mother assures her sleeping child/son/grown adult that she likes him. Then again, I'm not a parent, so I wouldn't know what is squicky or not when it comes to expression of feelings regarding one's child.
UPDATE 5 YEARS LATER
Guess who's about to give birth? Lol. Despite the low rating of 2 stars that I initially gave this book, I went out and bought a copy at a thrift store so I could add this to my son's library. The story still creeps me out a bit, but I get it now. That's not to say I'd climb a ladder into my adult son's bedroom in the middle of the night, but I'll sure as heck let my son son I'll love him forever. Just not creepily.

One-star reviews from sad, cynical assholes who think that reading a children's book as literally as possible and swearing a lot is the pinnacle of humor. If you can't even agree with the fact that everyone, sometimes, just wants to be loved and cared for unconditionally, then take a long hard look at your life. This book rules forever and for always.
I'm genuinely sorry that your mom didn't love you, but you can break the cycle. Embrace "Love You Forever."

Ok. The mom is so creepy I don't care how "cute" it is as a picture book.

This book is one of the sweetest i've ever read. It touches my heart and makes me just smile so big. It is so cute and loving. This could be for any age, but for a classroom i'd say k-1st.
This is great for a read aloud because it has a little song/rhyme in it that is said multiple times by the mother to her son but then at the end the son sings it to his old mother. It has a little bit more challenging language but still would be good for a new reader to look at and see what words they recognize. The color and illustrations are great, they are on one side of the page and the words are on the other. the colors are vibrant and bright and the illustrations are very detailed.
Discussions for this book would be what they liked about it, what words weren't familiar, how it makes the boy feel and the mother when they sing the song. It is also good for understanding a story plot, like it goes quickly through the age of when the boy was a baby and then he is now taking care of his mother.

My mom used to read this to me when I would do something that I wasn't supposed to. Sweet to read to your children.
