An excellent introduction to practical living as a Christian with doubt. Also a simple introduction to process theology, insomuch as people can live in their faith while also considering the process of becoming.

This was an even clearer outline of the various stages of faith that we can pass through. I found it very insightful. I love the clarity and the intimacy with which McLaren writes.

There comes a time along the journey of faith where followers of many religions find themselves in a wrestling match with doubt. However, many traditions discourage the inquisitive nature of doubt and even teach against such weak forms of faith. In this book, the author takes a new perspective as he introduces the idea that doubt is not the absence of faith, but rather the door that leads believers into the next stages of their journey. Through personal stories and experiences, the author discusses the four stages of faith with doubt as the barrier keeping us from moving forward in our experiences. In this book, readers are challenged to lean into their doubts rather than keeping them hidden. They are encouraged to ask questions and pursue knowledge. It is in the admission of doubt that the faithful find the courage to grow.
Although this book is very different from the types I tend to review, it was a book with which I resonated and grew from having read and interacted with. For many years, I’ve struggled with my belief system not always matching my experience and finding the path forward reconciling the two. This book empowered me to see that my doubts were valid and the fact that I was thinking critically about such things was proof of my growth. My favorite part of this book was the Reflection and Action section at the end of each chapter. I journaled my responses to some of the questions provided by the author which clarified my own beliefs and growth. Overall, this was a great book, but I am aware that it is one that the status-quo would oppose. If you are looking for freedom to doubt while also considering yourself a person of faith, then I encourage you to read this one and don’t forget to journal along the way!

McLaren has some wonderful points which I enjoyed. It was not the simplest book to read, but I did enjoy it for the genre it is. He is clearly a thought-provoking and clearly experienced man whom I admire. His resources for podcasts, books and other thought-leaders in progressive Christianity are wonderful. Having heard him speak, I think he is a much better speaker than a writer, though I found his book stimulating.

This book was affirming and inspiring for me as an individual and is critical for the church if the church is going to survive. I learned that I am not suffering from a crisis of faith, but growing through a crisis of a belief ( and it doesn't feel like a crisis). We need this book.

I listened to this book, and it was really good.
I confess: I only got through 75%. It just felt too long, it felt like it was dragging the point on.
That being said, I feel like it was really well written and researched and thought out. It was a very meaningful read.
