Faith After Doubt: Why Your Beliefs Stopped Working and What to Do about It by Brian D. McLaren

4.0

There comes a time along the journey of faith where followers of many religions find themselves in a wrestling match with doubt. However, many traditions discourage the inquisitive nature of doubt and even teach against such weak forms of faith. In this book, the author takes a new perspective as he introduces the idea that doubt is not the absence of faith, but rather the door that leads believers into the next stages of their journey. Through personal stories and experiences, the author discusses the four stages of faith with doubt as the barrier keeping us from moving forward in our experiences. In this book, readers are challenged to lean into their doubts rather than keeping them hidden. They are encouraged to ask questions and pursue knowledge. It is in the admission of doubt that the faithful find the courage to grow.

Although this book is very different from the types I tend to review, it was a book with which I resonated and grew from having read and interacted with. For many years, I’ve struggled with my belief system not always matching my experience and finding the path forward reconciling the two. This book empowered me to see that my doubts were valid and the fact that I was thinking critically about such things was proof of my growth. My favorite part of this book was the Reflection and Action section at the end of each chapter. I journaled my responses to some of the questions provided by the author which clarified my own beliefs and growth. Overall, this was a great book, but I am aware that it is one that the status-quo would oppose. If you are looking for freedom to doubt while also considering yourself a person of faith, then I encourage you to read this one and don’t forget to journal along the way!
