The latest from St. Denis, as Bruno and the local people deal with a string of burglaries of valuable antiques, including those stolen from the house of a retired British intelligence director, and the looming scandals in the Ministry of the Interior which might affect Bruno's long-distance girlfriend on the fast career track in Paris.

I'm taking a break from him. The first few books were good but, as I've said about other books, there were too increasingly annoying problems. First, Isabelle is a plot line that far outlived it's purpose. Second, there's not enough interesting murder in a rural region in France that everything has to be international mysteries with an annoying Brigadier spy-master? Now, we add a third. Only a schmuck of an author brings up homosexuality and can't do so without bringing up pedophilia, as if they must go together.
The plot doesn't matter, the above three things have ruined the series.

Another great book in the series. A good mystery filled with wonderful characters and food. I would love a cookbook to come out soon. If anyone is interested in a fantastic new series, it's not to late to pick up the first title, Bruno, Chief of Police by Martin Walker.

Quite possibly the best in the series so far, this mystery seamlessly weaves two plots together into an international affair. Despite a plot heavy installment with missing antiques and a grisly murder tying to an old case of Bruno's, there is plenty of time to peek into the lives of Isabelle, Pamela, Giles, the Mayor, and, of course, Bruno and his new puppy, Balzac. Fabulous sounding food, a bit more traipsing around the region, and a total page-turner.

St Denis is the victim of a spate of burglaries that are targeting unoccupied homes of foreign owners. When one of the homes turns out to be that of a ex-British spy, Bruno is thrown into the middle of political intrigue, with his on again and off again girl friend, Isabelle and her boss the Brigadier at the centre of the action. Then it really gets complicated when there is a murder at a recently rented home that should have been empty. Bruno is sequestered to the squad investigating the burglaries, via the Brigadier, and he soon believes that the murder and the burglaries are connected.
All the time he has to deal with the funeral for an old man who was a resistance fighter during World War 2.
I enjoyed this though at times it did seem a bit over complicated. The setting of rural France is different to what I usually read and one of the things I really enjoy about the series. It's good to read about a different legal system, because the French system is very different to that in Australia. Well worth a read.

It feels so good to return to Saint-Denis with Bruno. We get to know Bruno better... and it is delightful. The mystery is compelling and I love how Bruno solves it!
The ending made me want to check out the next book (always a good sign!)
