I don't actually remember reading this book as a child, though I watched the Hayley Mills movie version many times. The book was just as charming, although Disney did take a few licenses. I found it much easier to like Aunt Polly in this book. :)

My bookclub theme for August is Your favorite childhood book or one you wish you had read as a child. Pollyanna was my favorite book growing up but I hadn't read it over since I was a teenager. It's still brilliant.

I was inspired to read Pollyanna after John Kralik mentioned it in 365 Thank Yous. I thought it would be hard to to find, but it was free on my Kindle. I was pleasantly surprised at how readable the book was, given that it is, of course, dated. I enjoyed the story and the moral was well-taken. Accepting reality as it is and finding the positive side of life's struggles and disappointments is actually a very modern approach to life for all of those seekers drawn to buddhist principles and other spiritual teachings that focus on acceptance.

4.5 stars.

I have loved the Disney movie version of this book for quite a long time, so of course I needed to read the book. Like many adaptations, there are differences between the two formats, but I still felt at the end like the movie I love really did a good representation of the novel.

Pollyanna is like a slightly less mature Anne Shirley and she is utterly adorable. I loved the narrative and her character (though I can see why some readers can find her absolute cheeriness a bit grating). The novel does focus more on the Pollyanna/Polly relationship more than is given in the movie version and I felt that gave things even more heart. The contrast and tension between her and Aunt Polly is well done and I enjoyed reading through the evolution of their relationship.

The writing is comfortable and moves quickly. It is a perfect middle grade level read and balances a happy story with some definite hardships. It may be a little dated, but still holds great messages and a truly wholesome narrative.

This was such a fun listen, I haven’t read this book since I was a kid. It was nice to relive my childhood and feel “glad!”
