What can I say that hasn't already been said? This was a beautiful little story that reminds you to actively look for the good in life.

Pollyanna is a very sweet character who shines through. In the similar vein of precocious children, as seen in What Katy Did and many of France’s Hodgson Burnett’s work, the lesson of patience and goodness, particularly of religious inspired goodness, does at times feel crowbarred in and heavy handed, but the relationships between the characters allow the reader to still enjoy the story. Particularly the constant flow of visitors after Pollyanna’s accident, and the very clear internal conflict between love, enjoyment, and duty that we see Aunt Polly grapple with throughout the book.

One day, a few years ago, my mother casually remarked to me that she had always hated Pollyanna because of her continual, insufferable optimism.
I have not been able to read it since.
Actually, I probably could re-read it now and be absolutely fine. But for now I am content to just remember how much I loved it. (And I got a valuable lesson out of the whole thing: the things you say DO affect those who look up to you. A lot.)

I saw the Disney film first. And saw it many many times before finally reading it this week. The characters and scenes and different at times (if you are wondering) but the heart of the story, the very dear wonderful mushy warm bit in the centre is still the same. I love this book and recommend it immensely.

I think I must have read this when I was young, but didn't remember the story. I get [b:Anne of Green Gables|8127|Anne of Green Gables (Anne of Green Gables, #1)|L.M. This was such a wonderful story and makes me want to find the good in every situation like Pollyanna's father taught her to do.
