Billed as a short story, but It could be more, a whole novel! I wish there was more here.

More like a 3.5. I was actually surprised that I enjoyed this as much as I did. Jodi Picoult is my mam's favourite author, and her taste in books is vastly different to mine so I've never bothered picking up any of her books before. Now I kind of wish I had. Where There's Smoke is a prequel to Picoult's novel Leaving Time and follows psychic Serenity Jones, who has her own daytime TV show.

I didn't like Serenity. She's clearly at the point in her career where she's too big for her boots and needs slammed back down to Earth, which she ends up getting, thankfully. It was an intriguing story, and I'd have loved for this novella to be longer so that I could learn exactly what's going on!

This novella, or at least my version of it, has an excerpt of Leaving Time at the end, which is what made me want to continue on and read it and the other prequel novella, Larger Than Life, rather than this story itself. But it was still really good! Colour me pleasantly surprised.

i think, perhaps, i am going to read everything Picoult has ever written actually. I just love her style?? She blends politics and science and emotion and the human experience (often the female experience specifically) into such compelling stories and realistic characters. She's so cool.

This short story representssomething of a prequel to Leaving Time, and WOW. It does that super rare thing of preserving the character of theoriginal story while still providing readers with new material to process. THAT'S SO DIFFICULT TO DO. Major kudos to Picoult for doing it and doing it well.

This story was weird. I know it was a short story and not a novel, but it just seemed incomplete. The story was just picking up some steam and then it was over so abruptly. The story was interesting and I found myself wondering where it was going to go next...but then the answer was nowhere because it was over. It felt very unsatisfying.

This was a nice little short story and Jodi Picoult's writing is beautiful as always. I thought the concept was interesting and while there was no real conclusion, I really liked the way it ended.

I'm not sure how I feel about this short story, but it does make me want to read "Leaving Time" which I'm sure is the point. I have a lot of questions about this character and can on,y hope that they are answered in the novel this is a companion to.
