Liked it well enough, but not as good as the last one in my opinion. The characters I wanted to learn more about didn't develop all that much, another one did a lot.

The story in this one's a very sad one, and I liked it. I did have an idea where it was going, though. But that's more on me than on the book, reading it this late.

Nesser was a surprise find for me. Really enjoy his style. Very Swedish. His Inspector Van Veeteren is such a round character: smart, intuitive, fallible, and somewhat broken. Perhaps what I love most about Nesser's mystery is that the ending isn't what one would have expected, but at the same time, it makes complete sense when one looks back at the novel.

Niedługo po zabójstwie, zostaje zamordowany w taki sam sposób drugi mężczyzna. Komisarz Van Veeteren wraz ze swoim zespołem muszą odnaleźć zabójcę. Problem polega na tym, iż poszlaki są bardzo skąpe. „Nie ma czegoś takiego jak przypadek. Jest tylko nieznajomość przyczyn…” Zacznę więc od tego, iż uważam, że komisarz Van Veeteren to chyba jeden z nielicznych bohaterów, którzy nie irytowali mnie pod żadnym względem i zyskali moje zaufanie. Jest on osobą stanowczą, lecz również spokojną w rozumowaniu na temat prowadzenia śledztwa. „Chyba się zapominam. Gdybym nie był policjantem, skończyłbym jako morderca.” Czułam się komfortowo śledząc poczynania całego zespołu i uważam, iż jest to ogromny plus dla autora. Niestety, mimo iż początek tego postu zapowiada pozytywną recenzję, muszę powiedzieć, że pomimo szczerych chęci – ta książka była jednym z najnudniejszych kryminałów jakie do tej pory przeczytałam. Sięgnęłam po książkę, ponieważ słyszałam wiele dobrego na temat twórczości Håkana Nessera. Być może wybrałam jedną z gorszych jego powieści i pewnie są lepsze, lecz na razie myślę, że odpocznę od jego książek. Czytałam tą pozycję długo. Zdecydowanie za długo, lecz akcja według mnie strasznie się ciągnęła i pomimo szczerej sympatii do bohaterów – nie przekonało mnie to. Zacznę od tego, iż już sam początek książki zwraca uwagę na zakończenie, które swoją drogą było dość przewidywalne, a w połowie książki już utwierdzona w swoim przekonaniu na temat tego co było przyczyną – nie pomyliłam się. Każdy kolejny rozdział mówił mi o tym, że mam rację, a myślę, że właśnie o to chodzi w kryminałach, iż powinny być one tajemnicze, pełne grozy oraz nieprzewidywalne. Mam nadzieję, że sięgniecie po tą książkę, ponieważ warto przekonać się o czymś na własnej skórze, a powieść na pewno nie jest gniotem i po przeczytaniu tej opinii nie wolno wam tak myśleć, ponieważ nie uważam, iż ta książka jest tragiczna. Według mnie, dla osoby która uwielbia w książkach wartką akcję oraz szybkie tempo, powieść jest po prostu nudna, lecz dla osób, które lubią czasami spowolnić tempo – myślę, że powinna być to ciekawa pozycja.

About as rote as a detective novel gets. I was introduced to this series with book #7 (Hour of the Wolf), and was sufficiently intrigued to go back and start from the beginning (I enjoy a lot of Scandinavian detective series, and this one had good reviews). They have all been fairly bland, but this was the worst of the bunch, as it was pretty much the same formula as the previous one. Serial killer with ax to grind starts his/her spree. Police figure out there's a pattern 2-3 victims in. Very little in the way of actual detective work is done, which is a good thing, because these officers hold the public and most of their comrades in contempt and are reluctant to do any actual police work. They rely firstly on Van Veeteren's flashes of intuition out of the blue to come up with leads and secondarily, on civilians to phone/walk in tips to point them in the right direction. They get frustrated after about a week that "the case is taking too long."

Luckily for them, the culprit ultimately kills all her intended victims, plus herself, and the cops can get back to their grueling schedules of sex and junk food.

This book was particularly boring since the motive of the killer was obvious from the first page--were we supposed to be waiting with bated breath for the genius Van Veeteren to figure it out? The only saving grace of the series are the occasional flashes of sardonic humor between the characters, and the fact that they are short and easy listens on audiobooks.

It was okay, can't really see why the author has won awards. It was extremely similar to the later Wallander books but I don't know which came first although I think Henning Mankell has been around longer. Perhaps I need to read his other books before making any kind of judgement but I'm not impressed so far.

After the last novel I read, this one was a welcome relief. I enjoyed the quick pace and the changing perspectives. While the change of point of view did change rapidly, I felt it added to the furtive, restless air of a multi-murder investigation. The anonymity of the murderer is maintained even through her own narrations. You only know slightly more than the detectives about her identity. Though not an incredibly intricate or complex plot (readers could probably foresee most circumstances easily), the style and story I found highly entertaining and rewarding. Fourth in the inspector van veeteren series and a well crafted murder mystery. Van Veeteren is an enjoyable lead, both cantankerous and effective, as likely to go off on a thread of his own as any of the best fictional detectives.
In this book introduction allows us to meet the potential killer, there then follows a series of brutal shooting. The police have to find a connection before its too late as the press become increasingly critical.
Van veeteren struggles with flu making his mood even more grim.
A good solid crime novel in a series I am growing to enjoy.

This is a good story, but the translation leaves a lot to be desired. The translator seems to have decided that if he or she used a lot of American colloquialisms, it would sound like native English. But the excessive use of colloquialisms in this book just makes it sound kind of like a clunky translation.

At any rate, if you can get past the translation, the story itself is pretty compelling and the details of the mystery are good. I had figured out the answer, though, by the time I was halfway through the book.
