I took this book on a trip to France a few months back, and it was a lovely little travel companion! It was whimsical, easy to put down and get back into later, and light  — both physically and emotionally. In literature, a story that explains a natural phenomenon is known as a myth. By that definition, this book is full of myths, as chapters delve into why we have certain kinds of dreams and how they can prompt action in our waking lives. The structure of the book reminded me of a slice-of-life webcomic; the chapters were connected by the characters and setting but didn't have much of an overarching plot. This could have become a favorite read of 2024 if it did have a bit more of that substance, but overall I enjoyed it for what it was.

I enjoyed the stories of the people in the real world a lot more than the main story in the store. I thought the main character Penny was annoying at times, with little social awareness. Some decisions made by management seemed odd at times (
e.g talking about giving someone they trust the front desk job and then giving it to the new hire...what?)

I also thought the talk of profit and investments made the dream world feel too capitalist for my liking.

It was an enjoyable read but an overarching plot would have been good.

I listened to the audiobook, got it in a two for one deal on audible. Let's just say I'm glad I didn't waste a credit on it.
I just don't get it lol.
I think the author tries to explore how we deal with grief, loss, etc... but again, just didn't get it. It was boring, I kept waiting for the story to start and then at the end all of a sudden we get really dark then it's over.  Very repetitive,  I'd love to know how many times the words dream & sleep were used.

A sweet, cozy read about a magical place where we can purchase dreams. It’s in the vein of What You’re Looking for is in the Library and Before the Coffee Gets Cold. Mostly much more whimsical, but with a few emotional bits.

This was on track for a four star review right up till close to the end of the book - anything that makes me cry more or less automatically gets five stars, obviously within reason. This cosy magical realism/soft fantasy book is not my usual thing, but it made a nice change to read something hopeful and peaceful. I enjoyed the world that was built, and the characters were an unusual mix. It was an easy, light read up until it got emotional, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'll definitely read the sequel, and hope it will be just as good.

This was a fun romp. Not particularly deep or complex, but thought provoking enough to make it feel worth reading. Fun read too.

DallerGut Dream Department Store is a sweet, thoughtful, and very strange book. Think goblin market meets YA Ghibli, and you’ve got it.

It's incredibly low-stakes and message-filled. As long as you don't expect anything more, you'll enjoy it.

The only thing I’d like to see is more depth to the characters. More of what makes them tick, their real feelings and motivations. But other than that, it was a very chill and fun read.
