Obviously 5 stars for my favourite Star Wars story. Read this to see the differences between the book and the movie for my podcast and I wasn't disappointed. Luke's training was more indepth and there were other subtle differences. I really enjoyed it.

I'm not sure where or when I came across my copy of the novelization of The Empire Strikes Back. But I read it many times between then and when I, as an adult, could afford to buy copies of any book I pleased. This was before videocassettes, DVDs, and the ability to re-watch the movies any time I wanted.

Pretty straightforward retelling of the movie. I had a good time with it.

We discussed some of the quirks over on This Endorian Life: https://thisendorianlife.podbean.com/e/malani-the-warrior/

I have to admit... I don't even really like "Empire Strikes Back" all that much. I know that opinion is heresy and grounds for excommunication. And it's not that I dislike it particularly -- it's just that it somehow fails to induce the joy that most of the other Star Wars movies do. I find it somewhat boring, which is crazy because people overwhelmingly rate ESB as nearly their favorite Star Wars movie! I'm not sure what other people are seeing that I'm missing, especially given how much I love ANH and ROTJ.

That said, this book is literally a slightly meatier screenplay of the ESB movie, except that:
• Yoda is blue???

• When Leia says "I love you" Han doesn't say "I know," but rather the original script's longer line.

Other than that, there's literally nothing in this book that couldn't be more enjoyably experienced by watching the movie. Kind of disappointing, since I love novelizations typically for the extra windows they can give you into things that couldn't be shown by a 2 hour long visual experience, and I was hoping to get a new perspective on ESB and maybe enjoy it a little more.

Much better than I expected. Donald Glut has a long career in horror comic magazines, and it shows in the battle scenes in this book. He doesn't shy away from describing blasted body parts and people being crushed to goo.

The Empire Strikes Back’s novelization is certainly an improvement over A New Hope’s in the editorial department. Chapters start on new pages, there are the appropriate line breaks when switching between character viewpoints, and there are no spelling or grammatical errors. But best of all? There are no Earth terms! You can definitely tell the difference between the book that was released before the first movie and this one in terms of Lucas’s vision.

There are several expansions of scenes in this book. I liked seeing more of what the Imperial probe droid was doing on Hoth before it transmitted its evidence to the Empire, and I always love reading the conversation between Luke and R2-D2 before they head to Hoth. It is utterly amusing and I always picture it now when watching the movie. And R2’s utter protectiveness of Luke while they are on Dagobah is so sweet! I also greatly enjoyed Luke’s inner thoughts during his battle with Vader and during that most devastating of revelations.

This is a wonderful novelization of the movie, hitting all the major points while adding in a bit more. I would absolutely recommend this to any Star Wars fan or any newbie wanting to read the novels before or after the films.
