“‘Hunter Black gets cranky,’ Cricket informed Sinjin, ‘when he goes more than three days without assassinating someone.’”
Midnight Beauties picks up where Grim Lovelies left off: Anouk is trying to figure out how to get her friends back from the Prince Rennar, and in human form no less. Right away, though, Rennar shows up on her doorstep and Anouk enters into a deal that she’ll marry him to get her friends back - but first, she needs to become a witch to prepare for a greater fight against an evil that’s threatening to consume the world. Overall I thought this book was enjoyable and had a fun journey. I think the characters are my favorite part of the story; the gang and situation is unique. At the same time, the plot felt a little all over the place for me. The test that Anouk has to take to become a witch by walking through the coal baths felt like a very big part of the plot, but then it was just over and she was suddenly on her way to London. It just didn’t feel like a very smooth transition. The plot with Rennar also felt like it ended abruptly. Throughout the story, there’s this back and forth with the two of them where you never know for sure if Rennar is a good guy. And then when it seems like he’s making character growth he suddenly starts... killing a bunch of goblins? I do feel it was pretty circular to have Anouk change him into a bird, but it was also very anticlimactic. I do like how Megan Sherperd isn’t afraid to make big moves in her books and to hurt characters. For one, I almost got teary when Luc was dying and then he had to become one of the snow children and they can only see him when it snows now. But why, for the love of all that is holy, does Hunter Black always get the short end of the stick? Now the guy he was in love with - and the comedic relief of the book - is dead? Cut the guy some slack! He needs some happiness! Anyway, it was a fun a ride.

Could have been better the ending felt a bit rushed and some stuff were easy to guess at but i think the most annoying thing was the last minute character change from one character that was comletely unnecessary when I thought said character already had a character change

A worthy follow-up to Grim Lovelies. All the character development that made the first book seem slow here has fully fleshed out the story. Anouk and her partners in arms are out to save the world...and the adventure is heart pounding, heart wrenching and exciting throughout. The second book is even better than the first.

I finally finished the Grim Lovelies Sequel! This one took me a while and I got a little uninterested for a bit. 😩 I liked the start and end well enough, but some of the middle was just confusing in my opinion and I really struggled to stay interested when so much was going on. I’m glad I finished it though, and I still love the world and characters.
I loved Petra and Cricket, the two girls who had the most personality. I feel like Petra’s growth was really interesting, though we don’t get to see as much of Cricket in the sequel. Anouk got slightly annoying at the end, as did the love triangle. I feel like the plot twist at the end was sort of unnecessary too. Rennar was just…overhyped the entire series.
The world-building is probably my favorite part though. I love the Goblins and witches especially, and how the author gave magic a limit and consequence. I’d recommend reading at least the first book to get a taste of this world, and then continue to the second if you want to see what happens. I’m glad I read them, and I’m happy to have them on my shelves!

3.5 stars!
I definitely think this book was an improvement over the first one in a lot of ways. The characters feel more fleshed out, the plot was more tightly paced and, on a whole, the book felt more cohesive. That being said, some of the plot points were a little strange, even for me. Also, nothing really surprised me - I saw a lot of the twists before they came and that’s not always fun. Nevertheless, I enjoyed listening to this and I’m open to trying more of this author’s books in the future!

I really loved the world and just everything about this book. I might even say it's better or equal to the first one. I just loved it so much. It took me nearly a whole month to read but it was worth it. If you have read the first one, I definitely recommend reading this one as well.

This may be my first 5 star of the year. I loved every bit of the magic that is this book and the first.
