The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

I want to preface with the fact that I for one LOVE enemies to lovers books. This however? It was alright.
While the book consisted of many cute and funny banter moments between a Mr. Joshua and Ms. Lucy, I couldn't help but find it a little bothersome how the author had to continuously mention how "small" and "petite" Lucy is. We get it!! She's short! The book also tends to hit parts where it's super slow and nothing is truly happening to keep the reader engaged, so I found myself struggling with this book for months (which is long compared to my usual turnaround time).
On a more positive note, I will say that this book definitely had enemies to lovers moments that made me squeal! The development and unveiling of the character's emotions makes this book so worth it!
I know this isn't one of my more in depth reviews, but I am making this months late so I'm going based on memory. I would also however, not read this again and whatever you do: DONT WATCH THE MOVIE!!

[VERY MILD SPOLIERS!!]
I want to give this book a solid 4 stars for multiple reasons. I love the autism rep in it which made for a romance story that is unlike what I normally read. However, I couldn’t deal with the way Michael was always self putting himself for no reason other than that he is “like his dad”. It felt like it was brought up so many times and the book briefly touched on how his dad was a criminal but to me it felt out of place and it felt a little rushed. There is no background really on who his dad is and why I should be telling Michael he isn’t like him. I found myself confused every time he said phrases like that because Michael’s dad and what he did was a mystery until the end of the story. On top of that, it was so hard to get through the end of the story due to the terrible miscommunication trope (which tons of romance books do and I HATE!). I found myself struggling to keep picking up the book and continue on. I couldn’t stand that Stella kept bringing up how she was being pitied (but at the same time I get it since she has Asperger’s and if people have left her for that in the past, this is understandable). I did find it a bit corny how Michael fell into the overprotective boyfriend-yet-not-boyfriend trope. I will say that I did love that the smut in this book wasn’t too rushed at the beginning and that we got to see the slow build up in relationship/trust between Michael and Stella. That’s what ultimately made me root for them. The intellectual and meaningful conversations they had together. I also loved that we got to see Stella trying to live with being autistic and trying new things as well as accurate depictions of being overstimulated or not picking up on the hint of when to change conversations. I felt like in a way that resonated with me. I LOVE the family building this book did that I actually kind of wish there were more. I loved reading about all of Michael’s sister and actually really wish there was a book solely on the different sisters and their lives (I would spend my money so fast). They are truly what also kept be going and I really do want to read Quan’s book (not so much the bride test since the plot didn’t sound good to me and plus we hadn’t built a relationship enough with Khai in this book for me to care about him). I personally love the slice of life type of moments in stories so I really loved this book once it moved from being about sex with Michael and more onto meeting the family and truly getting to know one another. I overall did love this book but it had its moments so that is why I wouldn’t fully give it a 5/5 stars! P.S. there are more reasons but I can’t think of them right now as to why the book was bad/good since I’m writing this the morning after <3
