i can’t in good faith rate this because it is objectively a cringe-inducing read but i LOVE it’s a wonderful life so i had a great time

(be warned the word “pupper” is used in the narrative text multiple times :/ )

Not for the Faint of Heart by Lex Croucher

This is the only book I’ve bought new all of 2024 (love you Lex Croucher), so fair to say I went into this one with high expectations.
I was a little disappointed by the pacing/shifts in tone throughout the novel. The start is very slow and then a lot happens over few pages near the end. Regardless, the characters were loveable, the relationships (romantic and platonic both) were very sweet, and the overall atmosphere of a forest romp in the way of robin hood was well built and enjoyable.

Lovely little second chance christmas romance. Perfect balance of cheesy small town hallmark holiday hijinks and sincere emotion. Herring-Blake continues to cement herself as a cornerstone of contemporary sapphic romance.

Too heavy handed. Sounded great on paper but just didn’t work for me.

Dark, engrossing, witchy, convincing plot twists. This book made me feel the same way I used to when staying up all night to finish fantasy books as a kid.

Cozy, quick christmas wlw romance. Left me wanting more… despite the couple being childhood friends the romance felt very insta-love. The Christmas theme could have been woven through the story more.

Still gathering my thoughts. If Girlcrush had leaned heavier into horror, a la The Substance or Patricia Wants To Cuddle, I think this could’ve been great.

I really enjoyed the variation in prose in the novel’s last third that  was perfectly disjointed and paced to demonstrate a psychological descent-into-madness type narration. However, I’m not even sure if that was the intent.

I thought up until the very end that this was a twisty genre horror thriller following a deeply, deeply flawed victim, but the epilogue instead reframes the entire novel to become a strangely out of touch and unbelievable sci fi rom com.
