The Giver by Lois Lowry

I guess I had heard so much about this book that I had high expectations. I'd like to give it 3 1/2 stars. What a creepy existence when you cannot know memories, emotions or colors! it's hard to imagine how their world came to be that way and I would have loved it if the author had gone into more detail. It's certainly written in a way to encourage creative thinking.
A Weekend in September by John Edward Weems

I think this could have been much better if the author had developed a more personalized story about the victims/survivors. The copy on my nook was full of typos, so I'm not sure what the issue was there. I am glad that I read it. I had no idea about the 1900 hurricane and how severe it was. This book sure puts the spotlight on our advances in weather predictions and the need to be prepared.

I'm so happy to be done with this book. It was interesting to read, but way too long! I understand now why one reader felt the author was preaching throughout the entire book. The long speeches by some of the characters were a bit much. Still, it was interesting to read and relate it to our current economy/government.

I could not put this down once I got past the halfway point. I could easily see a sequel coming from this book.
In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin by Erik Larson

I found this very interesting and scary at the same time. It seemed so easy for Hitler to bully his way into power, while everyone just wrung their hands not knowing what to do. People were afraid of over-reacting or hurting diplomatic relationships, etc. I found it difficult to be critical of Dodd, considering what he was up against, but at the same time I wonder how a more assertive individual with stronger political connections might have acted in the same situation.

Another adventure in the life of Sookie and her vampire friends. I like the new characters that were introduced in this book. Fun read.
