The octopus was very charming and Tova's storyline of rediscovering hope for living in the face of the grief of outliving your loved ones as so beautiful and heartwrenching but omgggggggg i Hated Cameron.
Minus a whole star for the way he called Avery "the girl" when he met her, only for me to find out she's in her early thirties and is a single mom like.... minus a half star for trying to get me to emotionally connect to this whiny 30 year old man child. sorry not sorry, beautiful writing but would not recommend

Excellent and thorough review of the structure of class and poverty in America, dissection of the most prevalent arguments and misinformation around it, and appraisal of all of the types of solutions that should be campaigned for to move towards a poverty free society.

I think this is one of the most thoughtful, moving coming of age book I've ever read especially in terms of the handling of topics of mental health, religious guilt, suicidal ideation, identity and dealing with all of this through adolescence without losing sight of your community.

I only held back from a 5 star because although I knew the premise beforehand, I was not prepared for the deep existential despondency it put me in.

A really clever book about the art of wordplay, made me feel really smart recognising the more complicated substitutes Ella and her cousin used for forbidden words.
