This one is kind of hard for me to review due to the themes in the book such as being a widow and single parent. The FMC lost her husband early on in their marriage and has been single ever since while raising her daughter. It also confirmed to me why I don’t care for widow romances. It always feels like it’s the new guys fault that you aren’t ready to move on. It’s so rare you read a book about a widow that has healed from the hurt and ready to love again which goes into the other thing I didn’t care for the constant rejection Iris was doing to Angel.

I do feel like the banter and flirting was cute but I couldn’t help feeling like Angel deserved better I think everyone deserves to be chosen and loved out loud. I did enjoy the song references and even paused the book to listen to a few to put me more in the moment. The karaoke birthday party was my favorite moment!

I loved that this book focused on a couple in their 40s. However, it did feel like the only thing that was old about them was grey hair and bad knees. The attitudes displayed by both characters felt very childish at times. The FMC was hard to like and came off more pretentious than confident for at least 30 percent of the book.

The female narrator did not help matters. She made the female sound dull and boring the pacing of did not match the male narrator. The voice was very monotone and took away from the story to the point I wish only the male narrator completed the story. I think this story would be more enjoyable if you read it versus listening.

Back to the story, I loved the magical realism but I wish it was explained better ..... was it a hallucination, manifestation, or a ghost? It was also refreshing for a MMC to not let a FMC walk all over him for a change and he did it so respectful while still maintaining his boundaries. Overall, a good read.

This was hard for me to get into but I was completely and utterly hooked by chapter 3. I loved how unique this was aliens abducting people about to die so its less likely to disrupt what they were doing on Earth and families could mourn them and "move on" with their lives.

This also had my favorite fated mates in it. Toto stole the show for me and made me sad I couldn't talk and befriend a lion in real life :)

I also loved that although, this female made reckless decisions she at least weighed the pros and cons and was trying to be selfless in his decisions that risked her life.

This was such a fun ride and felt like coming back home to the writing that made me fall in love with Kimberly's work.

This is how you write an FMC! Finally it’s so refreshing so many try to write a FMC strong but she just comes off rude and mean and not a good person!

I felt her strong willed but she still had empathy and care for others! I did really enjoy it but I couldn’t tell you what was missing for this being a 5 star

I don’t like being confused and this left me confused until the very end! Nothing shaped out how I thought and I’m a little scared to read the next book.

I loved the MMC and his quiet strength and support.

This isn't my kind of romance. Defiance doesn't make a FMC strong in my opinion. It just felt like the MMC was begging her to be with him (3 rejections later and he's just on hold indefinitely which is insane please move on from this lady) she doesn't decide she want to be with him until like 96% into the book

Elsbeth was naive to a fault and some of it was hard to read. She was also logical to fault; Knowing how much something bothers a person and you ignore their feelings and continue to pry when they are clearly not ready to talk is crazy. It is also one thing to be able to take care of yourself but ignoring caution and being one track minded is also not the best course of action. This book was nothing like any historical romance I have read. The women were outspoken in the best ways. I loved how the men took to that and I loved Julians relationship with his brother as well. We like a submissive Duke :)
