Heartstone by C.J. Sansom

I enjoyed this much more than Revelation but Matthew was annoying me. I have to agree with Barak's impatience with him. His extremely stupid reluctance to tell Ellen he didn't love her, his one-track mind even when it's obviously a bad idea -- this was even more infuriating than his decision in the previous book to propose to Dorothy just a few days after her husband died.
Also I did find it a bit peculiar that the French have literally invaded but various people were willing to press pause and have long chats with Matthew even as cannons echoed in the background. But it was fun to read.

So disappointing. Loved Case Histories and I really enjoyed aspects of this book. But it was too all over the place, so muddled, so by the time the loose ends came together, I was skimming because I just lost interest. A pretty tedious read.

Since The Stand is one of my favourite books, I really wanted to like this much more than I actually did. It started off wonderfully but then just...got boring. I'm okay with the gentler approach to post-apocalyptic fiction, I enjoyed a lot of the philosophical ramblings, but it got veryyy tedious about halfway through and never picked up. I was half-skimming by the last few pages, just to finish it.
And like a couple of other reviewers, I got a bit tired of the! constant! exclamation! marks! in conversations.

Breezy read, starts off well but got lacklustre by the end.

Two stars, which I think is pretty charitable. Well written enough that I finished it, but I didn't enjoy it, especially from the second half onward.
