absolutely no narrative. not even a story, just snippets of someone’s life. it’s got some great lines but the author never follows up, expand and explores these and they’re just washed away

my first in feminist literature written by an asian woman. a very easy read and i finished in two days. it drew on actual statistics to make points throughout the fictional book, where a suppressed woman in korea struggles to stay confident and empowered in her life. although i would say the plot isn’t the main focus, the book doesn’t dive deeply into its characters either. rather it makes a feminist point through its main character, jiyoung’s experiences that end up breaking her. i often find myself thinking that gender inequality in southeastern countries are not touched on as much as gender inequalities in other parts of the world and felt more educated in what it’s like to be a working, married woman in korea. i would’ve loved to see the main character become like her mother in the end, or be given an explanation or a metaphorical episode for why jiyoung was acting strangely.
