The Darkest Night by Gena Showalter

Wanted to like this one more. Plot setup was good but the Insta-love was irritating, Ashlyn was so deranged and idiotic sometimes it was irritating, Ashlyn and Maddox consistently speaking in broken half-sentences (baby talk?) irritating. And the character soup was hard to keep up with. Way too many people and in-depth descriptions of each, I couldn’t keep them straight until 80% of the way thru the book. That said will probably read the second mainly because I liked the Reyes-Danika arc.

This entire book can be boiled down to racism, rape, sexual assault, regular assault, and overall violence. I have a strong stomach but had difficulty reading the scenes where Ginny is raped or beaten half to death or sold in a makeshift auction as a prostitute. Not to mention the kidnapping and murder… wasn’t for me. Plus, Steve is actually an asshole, which is saying a lot for me as I usually like a “bad boy” romance arc. Sigh. It would’ve been almost well written too if it wasn’t for the cringey-bad spanish grammar thrown into the mix.

The Insta love and a lot of the terminology was so bad. The diversity also felt a bit forced to me. I appreciate diversity don’t get me wrong but “the hottest set of locks I’ve ever seen” and “sexy Afro” were a bit try hard to me? Just call the person attractive and give info on their background. Idk. It made me cringe, as did everything else being “hot af” and “sexy af”. Somehow still liked the book which says more about me than it does about the book…
