Hostage to Pleasure is one of the most critical books in the series. The readers are introduced to Pure Psy, Amara and Ashaya, the Human Alliance, Zie Zen and we get more info on Kaleb.
The relationship between Ashaya and Dorian is one of the most impactful in terms of the growth experienced by both people. Dorian especially is confronted with his bitter actions and behaviour, and Ashaya supports him to sort his shit out. It was great to see more of Dark River and Mercy was also iconic.
This book had sooo much potential in my eyes, but the writing style from the very first page threw me completely off unfortunately. I just could not get behind the seemingly disjointed sentence structure and overuse of metaphors and similes - i think i’m just not use to it, but I was rolling myself half the time at the literary devices. Like when you get marked down in school for using TOO many similes, that’s what this book felt like.
I simply could not get into it. And the random sexual chemistry fully threw me off and felt disconnected to the rest of the novel.
Besides that, the book did get better towards the end in terms of story. I did get sad when Silas carks it and felt happy at the end of the book. Everything was wrapped up very nicely which I enjoyed
This book holds the most special place in my heart. Tally is my idol, and is honestly one of the most relatable characters. The love between her and Clay is eternal, and is SO GODDAMN CUTE
Plot: Ashaya, Katya interrogated, Krycheck killed Marshall, Anthony made council
I tossed up on ranking this a 4.75 or 5 star, because this book just slays so goddamn hard and is one that fully sticks with you. BUT IS ALSO FULLY FRUSTRATING. Cat, just kill the guy FFS. Why Rodney? Also why did old mate get turned into a vamp. I wanted the end of the fight between Cat and Bones to go a bit more slay than that ngl; I wanted it to have a bit more of an oomph. I NEEED Bones' perspective on this.
Also Vlad is the girl bestie; and Spade is an icon. I love these characters; and wow does everything make a lot more sense on the 2nd proper reread.
Jeaniene Frost does it again with another stella novella. It was very tense and I kept getting very worried that Elise was gonna do something dumb. Blake’s character was also quite interesting.
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated
3.75
This is what dark romance Should be - tho arguably it could be darker. But it’s just peak slutty romance and exactly what you would have expected.
It’s even so good that imma go and buy the second one
The thing that let me down was the brother and what happened to him - like girl aren’t you angry or morbidly satisfied? Anyway it was a good mix of HORNYYYYY and plot
THIS BOOOOOKKKK. After having a hard time getting through book 1 and book 2 (but knowing from memory that the series starts to SLAYYY from the second half of book 2) I really needed this one to live up to my memory. AND. DID. IT. EVERRRRRR The truck scene?? The 💀?? THE BATTLE SCENE? Screaming. Fainting. Squealing. Jeaniene Frost can WRITEEEEEE.
Also Cat is a slay in this book and we get introduced to the FAV OF THE FAVS: Vlad. THE REASON FOR MY HISTORY OBSESSION AND TASTE IN MEN. I LOVE THIS MAN.
The side characters full MAKE this book. This would have been a 5 star read if not for the enemy, Tate not fucking off, and vibes
