Cursebreakers by Madeleine Nakamura
3.0
This is objectively a good book, there was really nothing wrong with it. I just found that it wasn't to my personal taste at all.
This is a book that seemed to be just my taste but when I was actually reading it, I only found disinterest. It was hard finishing this book because the majority of it didn't have my full attention, it couldn't because I just really did not care for the plot at all. Which was confusing because I did enjoy the writing, I felt and saw what was being described clearly in my mind. So I would absolutely pick up another book by Madeleine Nakamura in the near future because I see the potential but with Cursebreakers, it didn't really give me the excitement I wanted.
But I can't deny that Adrien was a great main character, there is something deeply sad about him that captivated me. It was a ride reading his point of view, his interactions and his relationships with all the people he came across. He is such a well-written character that I feel bad not getting into this book as much as I hoped I would.

Such a cute and fluffy read. No smut, which I was surprised because the plot seemed as though it would have one but it wasn't a big problem nor did it lessen my enjoyment of the book. Definitely a rec, especially because the kid was cute. Very domestic scenes heavy. They just love each other.

Dude. I could learn all the languages in the world and I still think it might not be enough to describe how beautiful this book was. It was finding out about dessert for the very first time. It was seeing your favorite person after being away from them for so long. It was telling someone about your fears, making them see your flaws and still being accepted for who you are, finding out that they don't see you any different. It was sleeping at the car ride home and waking up tucked in your bed. This was comfort in book form. Marina Vivancos did it again.

⚠️⚠️ MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD ⚠️⚠️
The most popular horror movie I've watched was probably Fear Street. I'm not much of a horror fan because I'm a coward. So going into this, I really thought I would've liked it no matter what.
I was wrong.
The pacing. The main emotion I had for this book was annoyance. It built up so much only to have such a boring reveal and conclusion. Really. I was halfway into the book and nothing major still has happened and I just kept thinking when it would FINALLY start. It was so slow and then it went all by so fast; and that's because by the time the reveal happened, I got so disappointed at how boring the reason for the killings are that I could not take it any more and I skimmed every other paragraph. I feel like I finished the last 50% way faster than I got through the first 50%.
The writing. Nothing special. I read Cinderella is Dead and that was my problem with this author too. Cinderella is Dead was such an interesting book but the writing was so dull, I couldn't get into it the way I wanted to. But this is YA so this is a minor offense, I wasn't expecting a poetic writing after all.
The characters. All forgettable, even the main character Charity. Even when the reveal of all the characters behind everything happened, I didn't even bat an eye. It was like I was still waiting for something to happen. Like, oh, that's it? Since they didn't even make an effort to actually make me able to tell them apart from each other, I lost interest in the---what is supposedly----most exciting part of the book. The characters had the personalities of a box.
The romance. I do not know if this should even be part of this review because it didn't seem like the relationship of Bezi and Charity was a focus, as it should be since this is a horror book---BUT! They really were nothing special even outside of a romance story. There would be a big situation and they would only care for each other but they just didn't give me the proper impression of what lovers would be like. I feel like their relationship should have at least got to be developed more than it has been, especially since it's not like there were other couples in the book. Maybe this book would've benefitted more if Charity and Bezi weren't an established couple already but who even knows anymore. I'm done.
I think the main thing that could've probably solved all this was if it became a longer book with AT LEAST more fleshed-out characters. The scene alone with Javier's grandmother made him stand out for me more than everyone else because I found it sweet. In horror stories, the background of each character is what would make their death tragic. Because if I don't care about the characters, why would I care if anything happened to them? Why would I care to find out about what happens to their killer?
I really don't mean to talk shit about this book and I don't have any bad intentions toward the author. I just have my own personal preference and it is crystal clear this book wasn't meant for me. These are all my opinions and I'm not telling anyone what to think about this book at all.

That was cute. Great if you're looking for a quick and easy read.
Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake
This was a cute read. I had no expectations going into it, I didn't even really know what it was about because I just read about this when I was searching for Books Like (Ransom Rigg's) Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.
I loved Anna, she was honestly great. Cas was okay, I didn't really like him or hate him... He was just there; Thomas was a fun character at the start but then he said "Girls are bitches" and I started just not paying attention to him at all. Carmel was also an okay character, I was surprised she became a big part of the novel because I really thought we were going to forget about her after Cas heard the story of Anna.
What really turned me off from this book was Anna and Cas' feelings for each other because it still doesn't make sense to me. There were no scenes of them I thought, "oh so that's why they like each other." I get that it was important to the story that they cared enough about each other so they sacrificed themselves for each other but because I wasn't convinced of their feelings to each other, what should have been a sad scene just bored me. I was sadder when Tybalt died.
But this book really did scare me. I had to read this at daytime or with the light on because I'm a coward like that.
