This was my first time reading Wuthering Heights in full and I, like many, had wrongfully expected a glorious romance.

Reader, that is not what I experienced.

Wuthering Heights is a novel about hate, jealousy, anger, disgust and revenge. In all honestly, none of the characters are likeable. Even the ever-present Nelly Dean has traits and habits which make her appear less than friendly.

Everyone in Wuthering Heights has suffered and everyone (apparently) deserves pity and revenge.

However, I can't deny that the younger Brontë has written a novel that is filled with beautiful phraseology and scenes that will remain with me for a lifetime. "He is more myself than I" is just one, obvious, example. There are many more.

Generally, I enjoyed it but it was a bit of a slog. Everyone is so miserable, it does make it a hard read.

Layla was an interesting book. My first CoHo read and it was a bit of a romance/thriller... Maybe? It was easy to read but slow and while I think the concept was good, the execution wasn't that great.

I enjoyed really enjoyed Oranges. I found it had Northern humour in some parts and moral and ethical questions in others.

I think the fact that I mainly listened to it as an audiobook really helped. Winterson is the reader for the audio and brings with it her real, northern, upbringing.

It's also a fascinating read for anyone who is an ally of the LGBTQ+ community as Winterson learns how to balance her religious upbringing with her sexuality.

I really enjoyed this novel. At times it did seem quite strange but the darkness and strangeness behind it only made me more curious.

I really couldn't guess how it would end or what would be the outcome which is something that really pleases me with this type of novel.
