The more I think about it, the less I like it. The story was captivating and exciting — but my initial enjoyment from the storyline overshadowed my ability to see the serious flaws in the plot. Some of the details are clearly the result of a writer who has a serious inability to fill in plot holes and develop characters. Plus, some scenarios, like the feasibility of the staged car accident, are laughably ridiculous. Initially I gave it four stars. Then I sat and thought back to some of the cheap dialogue and gave it three. Then I reconsidered the way that Hoover used detailed sex scenes to hide the fact that her writing is simply mediocre, and I’m giving it 2 stars. YES — the twists and turns in this book are great! The writing itself? Pretty rough.

Supremely messed up book!!!! Really great writing. “It is a fact that cannot be denied: the wickedness of others becomes our own wickedness because it kindles something evil in our own hearts.” Did not choose to give it five stars for the sole reason that there were some small questions I really wanted answered. Love the ending’s ambiguity but needed some tiny details cleared up. Can’t wait to read more by this author!
