I am so angry. Angry and ashamed. Why is none of this taught in Canada’s schools? I knew none of this until today. When we learn about racism in Canada, we learn that it’s an American problem. This book exposes that egregious lie. We have to do better – and in order to do better, first we have to learn. This is a great place to start.

Some interesting ideas, but I couldn’t really get into the story.

The bones of a great story are there, but it felt like another round of edits would’ve made for a stronger, more cohesive book. Not typos –videos polishing the plot and refining the characters.

The first two-thirds of this book focuses on all the ways in which the current world order screws all of us and pits us against one another according to artificial constructs. Dabiri makes a case for, basically, tearing it all down and starting over.

On the one hand, yes. Absolutely. But on the other, it doesn’t actually leave me feeling like I can *do* anything.

But fortunately, the last third of the book switches the focus onto ways we can change our attitudes and paradigms. Small things we can do to facilitate better understanding.

All in all, well worth the read.

Engaging story with complex characters – all sprinkled with a little dose of what it’s like to be Black in America. Perfect for fans of Alyssa Cole’s When No one Is Watching and Jesse Sutanto’s You Will Never Be Me.

From the description, I thought this would be a nice light bit of cosy sci-fi. It’s not; it’s military sci-fi. Also, I’m really over reading straight male writers writing about men sexually assaulting women. It would have been a much better story without that.

Fun, cosy(ish) Christmas mystery about a mysterious Christmas shop.
