I listened to the audiobook which was good but I was not a fan of this book. The story gave me hallmark vibes but spicy. She goes back to her hometown after a rough divorce and runs into her friend she used to hook up with. They hook up within a few pages of the book without discussing at all if he's in a relationship.
Later she finds out that he's engaged but she sleeps with him multiple times anyway. The reader finds out early in the book that the engagement is fake but the main character doesn't know this and sleeps with him anyway. When she finds out the engagement is fake he says he loves his fiancée but he's not in love with her and that they sleep together. She tells him that's not a real marriage and he deserves the real thing. This bothered me a lot it struck me as super heteronormative and reductive of queer platonic relationships. Some queer people have queer platonic marriages like this with lots of love it's not any less a marriage because it's not romantic. I stopped reading after that it pissed me off so much.
The main character was so frustrating I couldn't stand her. The brujeria aspects were interesting but I'm not a fan of magical realism, it felt out of place in a contemporary romance novel. I read this book for a book club it annoyed me and bored me I gave up.
I’ve been super obsessed with Isegye royalty/regression stories lately but I’m starting to feel a little tired of how same they all are. This one took me by surprise. The art is amazing and the fantasy plot of uncovering ancient ruins, meeting fairies and having healing powers is so cool. It has the typical tropes but the plot is interesting. The love interest is lovely and so hot. Also her childhood friend damn everyone is so hot in this story. The abuse in the story was rough to read. It looks like going into season two that won’t be am issue though.
This rating is for the execution of the story, not the content itself. Memoirs are hard things to rate it's strange to give a rating to someone's life story. I feel it's best to judge how the memoir was written or performed not so much what was said. By this rationale, this book was 5 stars.
I listened to the audiobook Harry reads it himself he does an amazing performance. Hearing it in his own voice added a more personal touch to the story. Harry's Ghostwriter did an amazing job writing this. This was so well written the way the settings and details were described was so beautiful. I love the recurring metaphor of Harry walking behind a coffin at a funeral. His mother's funeral is what started a lot of things for him but this recurring motif was used to showcase his journey of healing and growth. He is at different points in his life each time he is asked to walk behind a coffin but at the end of the story, this metaphor once again is used to show the peace he has found in himself. The hummingbird metaphor at the end symbolizing himself flying away from the royal family was such an eloquent and beautiful way to wrap things up. There were so many lines in the book that were written so beautifully and eloquently. This is such a beautiful story at times hard to read but the ghostwriter's talent and Harry's performance of the story were truly exceptional.
This review is for Season One of Beware the villainess. I loved how funny, and chaotic this was. The art style was amazing. I've fallen in love with the isekai/isegye and this was such a great addition to it. My first introduction was the anime my next life as a villainess and this manhwa reminded me a little of it in the best way. The characters were amazing my favorite is Melissa. Yona cracked me up every time. Nine and Yuri are the cutest.
I loved how this reimagined Jane eyre but it was disappointing. It was too horror for my taste and the romance was not compelling at all. I was more interested in the complex father-daughter relationship than the romance. Overall I felt meh by this book it wasn't amazing but it wasn't terrible it was okay.
Pre-Review I see Jane eyre and I click want to read. THIS SOUNDS SO GOOD! I am living for these amazing ya jane eyre retellings.
