Permanent Record by Mary H.K. Choi
4.0
I rated this 4 stars and really, really liked this book. Mary H. K. Choi is an author I really want to get into (I’ve only previously read Emergency Contact and I loved it too) because I love the way she writes her characters. Pablo and Lee have such human flaws that the author didn’t shy away from at all, and the ending was so good. Looking forward to reading her other works!
As Old As Time by Liz Braswell

I bought this in a cute thrift store when I got overly excited because of how cheap the books were (this is one of the four) and it was alright. Nothing special but nothing really wrong with it? It felt like scrambled egg. It’s a story we all know and we’re used to. The writing and the characters were just mediocre and bland. I’m sure out there are some better Beauty and The Beast retellings (like how sunny side up egg and poached is better than scrambled imo), though I havent find them (I’ve read A Curse So Dark And Lonely though and did not like it). I finished the book, so I’ll give it credit for that, but it didn’t do anything for me which is why I rated it 3 stars.
The Last Graduate by Naomi Novik
2.0
I rated this 2 stars and I basically skimmed the last five chapters because I couldn’t take El anymore. I hated the writing style and the fact that most of the time we’re in her head without talking to anyone else was wayyyy too annoying. The only characters I liked were Liu and Orion, but they were barely even there. And the world, omg the WORLD, the concept was amazing and the magic system was cool but there was just so much stuff going on that i didn’t understand anything. And the plot relied heavily on the school magic system (which i didn’t get) so i couldn’t understand the stakes, which lead to me not caring at all. I rated the first book 3 stars, just because it felt new and bearable. But now I couldn’t take it anymore. Im wondering if I should still read the third book because of that cliffhanger!!!

i dnf’d Howl’s Moving Castle, but i’ll still rate and review bec i had around 50 pages left anyway and asked my brother to spoil it for me 😭. anyway, i rated it 2.5 stars, and i wouldn’t entirely blame the book (and i understand why so many people love it). it wasn’t a bad book at all, it’s just that the writing felt dull, the story was confusing for me, and i’ve never watched a studio ghibli movie and probably wont. i only had to read it for some research. but it was quite whimsical while it lasted. calcifer was the cutest btw!!
