The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson

Reread in 2025:
Still so good, and I wasn't bored in the beginning like I was last time.
**********
To be completely honest, I had a hard time getting into this book. The beginning was boring for me. But by the middle I was interested, and by the end I couldn't put it down.
Elisa was such a relatable character. I loved her flaws - her doubts about her role as carrier of the Godstone.
I also loved the role of religion and faith in the book. I appreciated the way it mentioned that all of the groups thought that their beliefs about the Godstone were the right beliefs.
I will probably read the next book, but I won't be rushing out to get it.

Not quite as fun as the Finlay books, but still enjoyable! It was cool to see more about Vero and her life.

The Secret of the Jade Bangle by Linda Trinh
4.0
My six-year-old has a goal to read more chapter books this year. She picked this one out at the library and we read it together. I actually also borrowed the audiobook from the library as well and we listened while we followed along in the book. There were quite a few Vietnamese phrases in it and I didn't want to butcher that beautiful language. 😅
This book really surprised me. From the title, I assumed it was a cute little mystery. But instead it was about Anne's life, connecting with her ancestors and her heritage, and figuring out how to navigate some instances of racism. I thought it was all perfectly age appropriate and a great way to approach some tough topics for young kiddos.
We have two more books in the series ready to go. I hope we can also get the audiobooks for those ones!

Finlay Donovan Digs Her Own Grave by Elle Cosimano

Finlay Donovan's life is ridiculous and I can't stop reading about it! 😂
This newest book has all of the hilarious hijinks I've come to look forward to, plus we get a lot more of her nosy neighbor, Mrs. H, which I thoroughly enjoyed. What a character.
I've enjoyed watching Finlay navigate her rocky relationship with her ex-husband throughout the series, and that continues in this book. Even though the books are silly, the maturity with which she handles that relationship is admirable!
With the ending of this one being what it is, I am already anxious for the next book!

Unsolved Case Files: Escape at 10,000 Feet: D.B. Cooper and the Missing Money by Tom Sullivan

I've always been fascinated by the D.B. Cooper case. This was such an easily digestible, graphic novel, middle grade book that sums up all of the basic information on the case. A great introduction to the wild event!
Wizard of Most Wicked Ways by Charlie N. Holmberg
4.5
I hate that I can't really review this one without copious spoilers for books 1-3. So I'll just say this book was tense almost fright from the beginning. I could not stop reading because I had to know what happened. It was gripping, emotional, and so fun to read!
