cute aww i love a feel good romance idk

ive been wanting to read a little thriller for a while and i also havent read any dark academia novels either so this was kinda perfect i enjoyed it... at first i was a little skeptical cause the prologue started out with the murder and then it went back to way before and i thought id get bored? somehow i didnt tho which was surprising to me
i liked that despite how awful all the characters are i still didn't want them to get caught the whole time i was likeee idc if they go to jail for drunk driving or whatever as long as they dont go to jail for murder. it was weird i think donna tartt managed to make me feel like i was one of them fr like i killed bunny too guys...
there was one thing i didnt like tho sorry im gonna sound like a freak rn but i have to say it.. i didnt like that francis would sleep with his male friends when they were drunk it was kinda predatory and annoying and fed into gay stereotypes it made me do a little side eye...

at first when i read i had a dream about you i was like hmm ok.. but then something clicked idk what happened but i just couldn't stop thinking about it.. like it fucked me up idk..

i am seriously at a loss like idk where to begin this was a journey. i didnt think id like these characters at all but for some reason i do just a little bit.. like yea yea murder is bad whatever but idk they were sweet sometimes. julian went back to feed the dead guys dog like awwww what a dumbass. if all abusive people just dated each other the world would be a better place.
love the symbolism of julians scar and love this bit: "They wanted each other in the way of flesh wanting to knit itself together over a wound."
made me so sad once i realized julian isnt a complete asshole and pauls just an unreliable narrator with so many insecurities that he doesn't believe julian could ever love him without there being an ulterior motive... poor julian was working his ass off trying to prove he loved paul OMG

ocean vuong has somehow managed to make what is essentially an autobiography into a book that i couldnt put down. it defies all conventions: theres no concrete plot, nothing that compels u to keep reading because u want ur questions answered, or because u want to find out what happens to ur favourite characters. when u read this ure reading it for the writing, and although that might sound like an obvious sentiment, it rlly is a feat most authors cant manage without using shock value or outlandish plots and characters to garner their readers interest…. like yeah, ok, nothing about ocean vuongs life is mundane, but it couldve very easily bored me and it didnt. and thats really all thanks to his writing.. his talent is insane and i hope one day ill be as good because really like… damn
