Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

"Freya isn't a celebrity. She just looks like one..."
What started out as needing a book by an author with the last name starting with 'V' for an alphabet book challenge, ended up being a funny and cute book to start the new year off.
While I started reading it with the mindset that it was because of the book challenge, I ended up changing my mind by the end of the book. It is a very cute rom-com and the characters were the right combination of lovable, annoying and goofy. It is something that I would consider picking up again in the future if I need a book that is an easy and fun read to clear my head.
When it comes to historical fiction set during World War II, it sometimes feels like the focus is more on what was happening in England, France and Germany, than the rest of Europe that was affected. With this book, while the main focus was romance with WWII in the background, you get a small glimpse into what is referred to as the forgotten Holocaust, which is the genocide of the Romani and Sinti communities in eastern Europe.
Part of why I enjoyed reading this so much is because historical fiction is something that I grew up reading and history has been something that I have been interested in for a long time. It also provided a glimpse into a part of history that I had vaguely heard/learned about but didn't know much about.
I don't know what got me into reading the occasional book on the military, but I always find them to be interesting and informative. This book was no different.
What I liked about this book was that it gives you an idea of what was going on in the Middle East in the early 2000s and how it trickled into today. Even though its the military and we can't have all the info, it was still interesting to read and learn about something that I wouldn't necessarily think to research on my own, at least not right away.
I first learned of this book after reading the Four Horse Men series by the same author.
It took me a while to pick this book up, mostly because I wasn't sure if I would like it. Once I did, it was something that I ended up liking, even though it took me a month to read it.
I read this right after finishing the first book and I enjoyed it just as much. Since I enjoy a good petty moment here and there, I chuckled at the dedication for this book because it sounds like something that I would say or do as well. The additional characters were just as enjoyable as the ones from the first book and I can't wait to read the next two books when they come out next year.
While it took me a while to start reading and get into the book, I had heard about the series and the author in November of last year on Tiktok. Once I started reading and got into the book, I did enjoy it and found the characters to be very lovable, though sometimes annoying. When it comes to reading fantasy books, it is kind of a hit and miss for me as far whether or not I will enjoy the book or not. But this is one of the books that I did enjoy and I liked the cozy aspect of it as well.
While it has been a while since I read a book that is considered teen fiction, I did enjoy reading "The Scourge." It was entertaining and I enjoyed seeing the friendship of Weevil and Ani change and grow. What happens in the book with the scourge can also be applied today, in a sense that we don't always know the full story or the truth behind everything that goes on in the world.
There were times that the story felt all over the place a little bit. But it made up for that with the way that the characters interacted with and helped each other grow. I also enjoyed the random sidenotes/newsletters from the deceased character in the book. Those moments made the character feel like a real person instead of a fictional character.
Historical fiction is something that I enjoy reading frequently and this fit right in. Especially since history was a subject that I enjoyed learning in school and is still something that I enjoy today. With this story, I learned about a part of WW II history that I hadn't really heard much about. While the characters are fictional, I liked that the underground library and the shelter it was in were real.
While I enjoy books with multiple pov's, some of the ones in those book felt a little all over the place and loke I got a little bit of whiplash. Though it was interesting to see how everything connected and worked together in the end. It is something that I would consider reading again.
