somehow, in trimming away much of the frills of the 1911 version, this edition loses a lot of charm. and there's no longer the link with a midsummer night's dream which i thought was quite fun

reads very similarly to kate milford's the boneshaker except with a lot more illustrations (and talk of fungus growing on someone as well as spiders, so be aware of that if those aren't things you love)

not sure teen sensation novels, no matter how well-written they may be, are exactly my jam...especially not ones where the author is so dead-set on slamming sex work as a profession while writing so much about adults perving on kids in ways bordering on concerningly erotic

tantalizing conspiracy plot aside, this fell short for me like the first of the duology did :( the stakes never felt high enough due to the absolute ease and convenience with which problems were solved though i did enjoy the young king very much. if anything bad happened to him i would've been furious
