It's a teenage story about a teenage girl coming to a new town and making friends in her new high school, with a twist: she's trans, this is the South, so she's being stealthy.
The story is lovely, she makes fast friends and has lovely relationships 🥰, but there's also really hard moments (transphobia, past suicidal attempts, bullying). It felt right for me to read the story now, but please be careful of your mindset while reading the book. I still recommend it for a realistic book about a trans girl who has a stereotypical highschool experience.

This is the first YA book i read and i really enjoyed revisiting it.
I highly recommend the audio version with Tatiana Maslany (free on spotify/deezer in certain countries), she's an amazing narrator!

Okay, cool, a book featuring a trans guy, that's reallyamaving. But. The story is extremely trope-y and maybe i'm too old/jaded to enjoy it?

Did not finish book. Stopped at 3%.
Did not finish book. Stopped at 3%.
stopped because thereare too many unbearable tropes of old fantasy books in the first chapter alone
- the girl is told by her brother to make camp (sexist jerk)
- she's subjected to oggling and leering by people who capture her (sexist and machist trope)
and now i realize i also didn't read past the first chapter of Queen of the Wyrd, by the same author. Makes sense, really.

This is a story of politics and toxic relationships, of hurt, trauma and care. (And sapphic characters, and a fire elemental!) As always, the characters are complex, they're not perfect but they do their best to deal with their trauma and bad relationships. 🧡
