Relish: My Life in the Kitchen by Lucy Knisley

Putting a frame of a bunch of fat people with the text “Most of us seem to have problems with moderation” was not only incredibly fatphobic but entirely unwarranted and misinformed. Obesity is exacerbated by diet, but this makes it seem like fat people exist because of how much food they eat and what they eat when often times, these decisions are out of the person’s control (i.e. food deserts, accessibility, dietary restrictions due to allergies, money, etc). Additionally, this is a nuanced conversation that can’t be simply summarized by “moderation.” This was really unfortunate to see in a graphic memoir all about the appreciation of food and cooking, especially when the author has entire sections of this subject (weight loss/weight gain) in their latter graphic memoirs. I’m so disappointed to see this. I really wish this hadn’t been included, and I’m really turned off from future releases because of this.

Sometimes, the pacing felt a little slow, but I did enjoy the experience overall and learning all about the fun facts regarding weddings!

I’m sorry, but I can’t legit take any of this seriously. it’s giving the same energy as that one romance drama about the girl who turns into a chicken nugget. The art was just way too simple and lacked a lot of value and clarity compared to other manga. Unfortunate cause I do like the artist’s character work.

Not really enjoying the format of this one and I find the really thin, almost newspaper like pages frustrating because the lines or pictures on one side of the page do show through on the other side :(

Not a bad premise and the art is pretty, but I didn’t feel particularly compelled to continue reading it. The story just feels too basic.

It’s really interesting to read this graphic novel as a long time follower of Lucy Knisley, and I recalled many of her small scribblings, tweets, and musings before, during, and after her pregnancy. It was a wild ride, and while I personally don’t have kids, this was such a beautiful, relatable, and incredibly informative book showing the fortitude and work involved in the journey to even become a mom. I’m always in awe of people’s decisions to become a parent, but this book made me appreciate them even more, especially after seeing a more in-depth and personal explanation of what happened to Knisley while in the hospital. The ending honestly brought me to tears, and I can’t wait to recommend this book to more people.

Gorgeous art and interesting premise. I like that it’s based off of a Breton folktale, but the characters felt very one dimensional and Briac having the audacity to come crawling back after what he did… crazy.

A lyrical folktale of family, perseverance, and the importance of stories. It’s tragic and bittersweet, and at times, overly flowery, but I really enjoyed my time with the Yaga siblings and Thistlefoot. I’m excited to see what Nethercott will write in the future, but I’m really excited to read her short story collection in the meantime!

At first, when I started this, I didn’t really get why it was so beloved by everyone online. While it was a slow start for me, I GET IT NOW. I UNDERSTAND.

What an incredible book. The world building, the characters, the queer and disability normative world, I loved all of it. Kissen, Ina, Elo, and Skedi are such good POVs to follow and had great variety to their narratives and narrations. I am so excited to read Sunbringer. AAAAAUGAHAHHAHHHHHHHHH, INA, MY BELOVED!!!!!!!

A really straightforward and predictable but VERY fun reimagining of Beauty and the Beast. Bryony and Beasts were great protagonists and honestly?? Points for
keeping the Beast a beast and not be magically transformed back. Big monster lover here so thanks Kingfisher 💖💖
Kingfisher’s fairytale stories slap so hard. I can’t wait to read more of these fantasies from her and her romances are ALWAYS top-notch.
