mcs character and motivations completely changed from the first book and was too jarring for me to consider it a well written continuation.

incredibly moving and poignant. my heart breaks for every melinda and teenage girl out there. growing up is so hard and the exploration of trauma, processing, and healing that melinda goes through fills me with such an intense feeling of melancholy, i was so insanely proud of her growth. most of this book was just me screaming at someone to pay attention and help her but you can only ever help yourself and learn to live with your own life. so extremely realistic even for today. great book.

i shouldn’t expect much from a middle grade book that i had vague recollections of reading during a state test, but it was pretty good. i wasn’t expecting it to be so hand-holdy for a book from the 60s but i can see why a lot of people were really impacted by this book. percy jackson especially omg.. the wording felt so riordan that i wonder if he got inspiration from here. anyways it was quick, easy, and impactful. with how on the nose it was, i honestly can’t rate it higher than 3, personally. just not my cup of tea but absolutely a wonderful choice for middle grade readers.

solid cinderella retelling, however, the prequel was much better. i didn’t expect a retelling when i started this book and i probably wouldn’t have read it as i read another ya lesbian cinderella retelling a couple months ago. this one was much much better than that one though! once again beautiful prose, yet emotions feel lacking sometimes. not much plot and yet not much characterization either. the best word i can describe this book as is wispy, floating along with the wind and seeing where it takes you.
