Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Steven L. Hopp, Camille Kingsolver, Barbara Kingsolver
4.0
It was enjoyable to read about the gardening/farming efforts, but there is also a lot about US policies, which as a non American was a slog to read through, all relevant and informative but dry (and outdated at the time I read it). I can recognise Kingsolvers's skill at writing purely by the fact that I was genuinely interested and invested in the mating habits of Turkey's by the end of the book, something I never imagined happening. Over all I'm glad I read it and will revisit it for ideas and recipes in the future.
The Unselected Journals of Emma M Lion Volume 8 by Beth Brower
4.0
I love spending time in Emma's world and hanging out with all the characters. I thought I wanted a longer book and yet in the end the wonder seemed diluted by the length. Not enough silliness and fun, not enough of the side character such as the reprobates and generally learning more towards serious. I still enjoyed it but not one of my favourites in the series.
Shifting Shadows: Stories from the World of Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs
4.0
I was expecting to enjoy some of this and have to plow through other parts but Briggs is so good that I found myself fully invested in each story and enjoying time with characters I never expected to
Knight's Shadow by Sebastien de Castell
4.0
Spectacularly read as an audiobook and full of some great fantasy and adventure. I found it a bit too clever for itself at times and the twisty nature got too convoluted, over all though, very fun (besides the torture moments of course).
Think Twice: Simple puzzles (almost) everyone gets wrong. Perfect for playing with family and friends this Christmas by Alex Bellos
3.5
Some good puzzles in here. Most are fairly accessible but there are some that require specific knowledge such as American geography, and others in colour that are useless on a black and white e-reader.
Not That Fancy: Simple Lessons on Living, Loving, Eating, and Dusting Off Your Boots by Reba McEntire
3.5
Not much actual content. But Reba, as always, is very likable.
Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons
3.5
I expected to enjoy this more than I did and I can't quite put my finger on why I didn't. Perhaps it's just the dreary setting of cold comfort farm itself, or the witty, intelligent Flora not quite living up to some other characters of the same vein in other books. Still enjoyable on the whole.
