I bought this book for a dollar at a thrift store because i'd heard so much about it, but wasn't really expecting to like it since i'm not really a fan of fantasy books. I was pleasantly surprised by how down to earth the book was, especially as a novel based on a myth and gods. the epic and the magic within it doesn't seem fantastical, but a facet of a(n almost) human, very earthly experiencing of life and all it's pains and ills and joys. I truly enjoyed this book and am excited for her future books and to read her other publications!
WOW. Loved the book the whole way through, but was thinking it wasn’t something I would reread as I was about ⅔rds of the way through but when the third section hit. Incredible. Love daisy Johnson’s writing style so so much, and that twist was great but it hit home so much and was described all so beautifully. I love the way johnson writes the house as a body and the body as the house in such clear and spectacular language.
the art and story telling is great, and there are pages and pages of Tyler’s favorite things about her mom, the little moments that were so cathartic and heartwarming to hear. I can’t think that way abt my mom right now but I almost could through Tyler. this is about her losing her mom to terminal illness so big TW for the whole process of that but it’s so spectacularly accurate to the little moments of losing a mom young that no one else gets and it’s so nice to hear and see that someone else experienced the same thing. Highly highly suggest.
5/5, really accessible language, covers a really wide variety of topics, is reallllly really intersectional, the most intersectional of full feminist texts I think I’ve ever read. Should be required reading for everyone.
the way tartt is able to weave scenes - out of order, but in perfect time - to create her story is incredibly deft. i was skeptical about the book bc of the cover and the tiktok girlies hyping it, and was pleasantly surprised to enjoy it.
that twincest was ... not necessary tho. nor do i think the scene with the racist auto repair guy was. i'm sure there were other ways to prove that he was an unreliable witness
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

nothing much to write home about. i'm not usually a fan of fantasy, but this was short and so a good introduction. I started out reading a hard copy, and graduated to listening to the audiobook while working, and i found myself enjoying the book more as it was realized through a voice actor.
