I wish I could have seen the play rather than read the script. After having read many narratives, the bare bones of a script did not convey the intensity obviously felt by the characters in this play. I am sure I have missed much of the depth of feeling and the circumstances which created this. The agony of the squandered lives just did not have the desired impact. Now I am curious to see the play and shall certainly make an effort to attend a production. But perhaps that would be what Chekhov wanted?

Beautiful, sleek tigress, you must have your victims! For a whole month I have done nothing but seek you eagerly. I have thrown over everything for you, and you love to see it. Now then, I am sure you knew all this without putting me through your examination. I surrender. Here you have me—now, eat me.

The first time I read this I gave it a 2.

But the second time I read this, I would give it a 3.5 -- I think it grew on me hearing it read out loud -- a lot of the humour came from the actors notes in the text and the choices the actors made while playing the characters
I also thought it was funny that one of the actors who hated Chekov usually, quite liked her character Marina - apparently reading and hearing Chekov out loud changes it for a lot of people.

The final monologue from Sonia about having hope and working is quite a sight too.

The third time I read this - it grew on me a little more, but not enough to change my rating. I did get a lot more out of the monologues this time around though, some of them even seemed less jaded from some of the more jaded characters which was interesting

If I'd had a normal life I might have been a Schopenhauer or a Dostoevsky.
